When my friend used to grow jars, she wouldn't loosen the lids. If/when growth starts to slow down towards the end of colonization, she would remove the tape from the holes and flip the jars.

The answer you're asking is an estimate, it all depends when the mycelium needs more O2, normally after 80%-85% being colonized the cake needs more O2, colonization time depends on ambient factors like temperature , also on substrate composition and humidity and ending with the spore counting and its genetic avaiablity to germinate and grow on those factors.

Just turn on the oven at about 400 and open the door pull out the tray pull you up a chair and set your jars around you on the floor and open your jars one by one over the oven tray leaving open for only a few seconds and close back up tight and then the next one and so on. that should do the trick. The heat coming out the oven should clear away all contams.

There's no need for him to open them up and blah blah blah. He should have made sure the jars were put on loose when he was going to PC. I would think opening the jars up when they are that suceptible to contaminants would be stupid and inviting contamination. But if you are in a bind, build a fucking glovebox so you don't have the problem next time!

did the poster say anything about innoculation? why did you tell him to open his oven?
it's funny how in these days and age, people can't seem to grasp the concept of answering what is asked.

you really shouldn't have to open the lids during colonization. the only reason something would need air exchange is if it were breathing. the only time i've had to open a jar was when it was contaminated, and oh how it smelled like shit :P

Here's a novel idea Psychomanium: The mycelium needs CO2 to grow, but after awhile, it gets too much. To stimulate further growth and speed up colonization, fresh air will need to replace the CO2. To answer the original questions, you should flip the jars, unscrew them a little, whatever, it's not an exact science, when you see that your mycelium growth has slowed down dramatically.
