OK so I read that you gotta PC the jar for 45-60 min. doesnt that sound excessive? does it take that long to kill bacteria and spores? what about ovens or just sitting the jar on a washcloth and sticking it in a pan and let it heat up for 10 min?
if it gets contamunated, isnt it due to inocculating where you have to stick the syringe in the 4 holes on the top?

NOT....GOING...TO..FLAME....
Yes it's all necessary, it takes time for the heat to fully penetrate all of the substrate. Anything less WILL contaminate. If it weren't necessary, trust me, the experts wouldn't do it.

i'll tell you what i told Z-tard. You don't even have to sterilize them. Just stick your thumb up your ass. Trust me, it helps make them steril.

oven works for pasteurizing bulk substrates, pretty sure it's gotta be pc for jars. PF's got a method that can be used with a regular pot, check www.fanaticus.com if you don't have a pc'er.

The way that you have worded this makes it very hard to see what the question is. Contamination can be, and most of the time is introduced through innoculation, either due to a contaminated syringe, or filthy working conditions. Or it can be caused by improper sterilization.

About the 45-60 min in the PC, I've read some people only PC for like 20 min. (do a search to be sure.)

If it is just the time that bothers ya, 20 mins @ 15 PSI will do the job for :
PF tek cakes
Wheat Berries
PF wheat berry cakes
Inverto's

I caught my first jar of contam about 3 weeks ago. I am guessing it was the shorter PC'ing time. But waiting for it to cool after 20 min's is a big difference than an hour. So I like the 20 min style.

ok seriously do people ever break jars to get the mycellum cake out? someone said to break em. wont you get tiny pieces of glass, damage the cake and make a mess? also can you break the cake into pieces getting it out of the jar and bury it under soil in the fruiting container and let the shrooms grow out from the soil?
about the 4 holes, can 3 or even just 2 holes be used to reduce contamination?

Ya gotta do what you gotta do...
Leave it at 4 for air exchange, makes it easier to innoculate more evenly as well. I don't think there would be any advantage to fewer holes.

You don't, jar lids or foil with holes punched only one of two.

I see. I heard some mentioning of using more than one layer of foil, the first layer has 4 holes you inocculate then put 2 more layers of foil over that? even with 1/2 inch dry verm on top, contams can easily go thru after a week or so?

I got away with just boiling the jars. Then I got smart and quickly realized that I wasn't gonna do cakes forever and invested in a All American 915 PC. That machine is serious ya heard. If you ever have any thoughts of advancing to grains later on, get a PC. Whether a Presto or All American just get it somehow.

Hey LSA ...I thought just like you did....On the 5th of Sept. I had boiled my jars for only 40 minutes. Not only that , but i think water got in them.... After they cooled i looked at them and thought , "Well they look clean , smell clean ." They must be clean then right? WRONG !!! After a strong gorwth the first day everything stopped .....Six days into the stop i noticed an odor similar to my gym socks after running a couple of miles. I popped the top and threw them in a plastic bag to stop the odor..... It really stinks..Moral of the story, If you want a smelly pile of shit pc for 10 min...You'll have some red funk growin in no time....Thats what you' re tryin to grow right?
