assuming this is contamination :P

i have a friend who's growing p cubes {matius romero} on pf substrate (with added flax seed meal) in 1 QT jars with filter tops (btw, most of them are doing well, at least the ones with a half-decent amt of innoculate [2.5 cc / jar] )
he's grown a few batches before using the same techniques (save for 1/2 pint jars), including sterilization using a spaghetti pot (which isn't exactally an auto-clave ) -- and has never had any problems with contamination during the initial mycelium growth in the ball jars.
well... this time there's some question about contaminates... there is one jar that looks a bit different from the other jars. instead of the the mycelium growing out from spots that start from the innoculation points -- there is some type of fungus that is growing uniformly about the outside of the cake just inside the glass -- this fungus is fluffy looking like the p cube mycelium, but... it has a greyer tone to it -- not the obviously bright white of the p cube mycelium .
So... a couple questions.... 1. I'm assume this is contamination and it should be thrown out, but... will this effect the other jars that have been in the same box?
and question 2... off the topic -- anyone have a suggestion about what kind of temperatures / humidity ranges for this growth stage? there's a bunch of docs about what temps / humidity levels one's terrarium should have, but... what about the environment for the cakes, room temperature in a closet seems to work, but what could be the optimum conditions? thx!
peace,

The grey is cobweb mold, toss it. No it won't jump into your other jars. But spray your jars down with a 10% bleach solution. 85 degrees and humid, as in a warm terrarium is good for colonizing jars.

wait and see if its a contam, you will notice that greyer spot will grow and/or turn black. if so then observe it and chuck it. this doesnt mean that all jars will get it, but it does mean that somewhere in your sterilization/innoculation the cake was contaminated and may be a residue in the jar or off the needle.

yeah i agree, no point in tossing it out cause theres no real maintanence for colonizing jars, might as well wait and see if you can salvage it, maybe the contam will be beaten, and plus I would even try to isolate the healthy mycelium once youre sure it actually is contam, maybe isolating the jar away from the others wouldnt be that bad of an idea.

thank you.
the contaminated jar has been put aside, and... another batch has been innoculated -- of course after some much more careful sterilization.
thanks!
