forgive these stupid questions

I am new and apologize if questions like these have already come up. A friend of mine acquired a syringe of Treasures from sporeworks. Inside was a milky small blob. Question 1-contaminated or normal.?? He could not find vermiculate so used perlite in jars instead. Can this work at all? Given the obvious advantages of breaking up the cakes and casing them in trays, I've noticed a bunch of guys swear by leaving them be. i was curious about personal experiences/opinions. I have no experience myself. If anyone has any fool proof break up method id be thankful. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys

Well, I wouldnt know if it will do good with perlite. Are you shooting for larger yields? If so, then case it. Put the cake in a plastic bag and go to work. Check out the Teks for casing, fanaticus.com has a good tek on their site.

-The syringe is prob. ok... I ordered from sporeworks and the syringe I got was a very good one. -Actually Verm. and Perlite are used for different things. Verm is used to absorb moisture and Perlite is used to wick off the moisture. I do not think they are interchangable. Try looking for a tek that uses birdseed or something other then Verm. -Casing does present more of a chance of contams so maybe he might want to try some left as cakes just so if there are contams a spore print can be made just so all is not lost.

The blob was "milky", as in white? And to answer your question, no, perlite will not do, vermiculite contains nutrients as well as the ability to absorb water, perlite is volcanic ash, which contains no nutrients. I'd use straight brown rice flour before I tried perlite with it, water retention is the key, and you do need it.

the blob was white -the best/only way i could describe it would be flem in water-but white and about half the size of a tic-tac. apparently the blob disappeared(probably into the jars-but another one started to form a few days after. clueless.....

Vermiculite contains nutrients? Haven't heard that one before.

It has minerals in it, thats a given. Thats kinda what nutrients are, but to as what can use these minerals... I dunno, you're not likely to get contams...

In reply to:
Inside was a milky small blob.
I'm supprized no one got this one! The spores germinated inside the syringe.....and the white was mycelium.
At least this is my opinion.

I was thinking that but thought it was a stupid assumption. Is it bad if they did germinate inside??

That happens to me sometimes when i make syringes with tap water rather than distilled water. Maybe the minerals in the water make them germinate. I never had a problem with that, though. It's even better because i have growth in the jars in 48 hours.

it's not a good sign, as there's no food in there to sustain life.

MY GOD... You're right? What will happen? Does the syringe now have a two week(+-) timespan to "live" I'd hate to see this happen...
Sooo, anyone else think that the syringe will go bad?
