Romantic Love
    #6393327 -

is it real?

It is the one source of my misery for 6 years. It is the one thing I want.

It is because I want unity with something real.

I would be better off not wanting it.

Should I give up? This would be tantamount to abandoning all goals in life.

Is one better off not wanting goals? How can you have a goal, without becoming emotionally invested in it?

I do not want the pain of it anymore. I want a sense of unity. I want to feel real feelings. I want to feel a feeling. I don't want to be lukewarm.

Do we have control, do we have free will? I put forth a lot of effort...... but it is as if even upon being brave and seizing what was a wonderful opportunity, that I was pushed aside and forgotten.... no time for you... no time for love.....?

Is it all about being patient? What if you are patient for something that cannot come? Where is the free will? Can I create reality? Then I must be patient! But how do I know if I can create reality?

Of course it's real. But it's not all on your side. You can't create romantic love - it's a creation between two people.

I don't understand how to make decisions. I'm not sure if anyone ever taught me, contrary I was taught not to make them.

How do I know? I trusted this decision and I went and followed it through but it did not yield what I thought.

But if I do not do anything, if I do not continue to make efforts, nothing will ever happen.

I've been honest. I expressed myself. But of all things, I was told no time. So I was honest with someone else, I expressed myself completely, and there was resonance but, again, I am overlooked because of lack of time.

What do I do? I have a goal. I would prefer to create an enjoyable life where I have good relatoinships. At the same time I would prefer to be happy and not to make my happiness conditional upon other people, for that only leads to bad things.

I feel like I am mature enough to love someone.

It's not just being patient because I have to do something don't I? Something more? If what I did before wasn't enough?

I know I am a beautiful person, and I know she is too. I know ultimately I am my own soulmate, but I know that the merits of having a loved one to talk to and spend time with are also tremendous and would help shape my future the way I want it to go.

Sitting in my room meditating for 5 hours just isn't entirely it, it's partially it. I am on a journey of sorts, but I do not really feel like I want it to be a solitary journey.

I don't know the right answer to your problems like most people. However in order to answer my own questions, I've found it best to focus on making myself a healthy person worthy of dating. All the qualities I expect of someone in a good healthy relationship I've been focusing on creating in myself. I also think about what the buddhist say about desire and have been trying to realize that even a relationship doesn't create happiness. Happiness comes from within no matter what your cirumstance. you can't control others so control you're self. I'm going to stop here and apoligize for posting drunk.

I say let it go to an extent, and let it come to you. Its what most people want, but if you go around desperately searching for it, you know youre not gonna find it. So just be happy, and it will come when its supposed to. "dont worry about tommrow lord youll know it when it comes"
You know?
Yes you can create your own reality
Law of attraction- If you wish for something you can get it. If you want love, wake up in the morning and wish for it brother.
Its gonna come some day, just be patient, and dont always be thinking about it. "Hold on yea, for a break"

Maybe I'm getting confused reading this thread - would one of you people supply me with a working definition of "romantic love?"

yeah you're right, we need some specifics.

in mist there is a certain set of circumstances that lead the main characters infatuation. its definatly worth a read. easy and entertaining.

but i think the worst kind of romantic love is one where either party creates an image in their mind that is above any realistic expectation.

and infatuations tend to just be compensations or addictions.

but i've seen my uncle and his wife and they really really enjoy being around each other. so maybe thats what good romantic love is.

Most relevant definition of romantic:

"Having an inclination for romance : responsive to the appeal of what is idealized, heroic, or adventurous b : marked by expressions of love or affection c : conducive to or suitable for lovemaking."

I would guess that the element people are responding to in the negative is the "idealized" appeal. In order to idealize a relationship, you must ignore all the less-than-ideal aspects. This creates a HUGE blind spot, and eliminates the possibility of true intimacy.

An interesting article on the "types" of love:

http://cla.calpoly.edu/~bmori/syll/311syll/Lovetypes.html

IMO, Storgic lovers have the best chance at lifelong partnership AND individual fulfillment. The other types of lovers all seem to represent varying degrees of emotional/mental imbalance and/or co-dependency.

First define "romantic love" and then define "real."

I do not take "romantic" love in the 'proper' sense to be real. Old skewl romantic love would be a love that was predetermined by the stars or nature. This isn't proof that it isn't real.

I've been reading your posts about love for a long time, Leery. This is definitely your obsession. You can't stop thinking about it in a certain way.

This is no longer about love and whether or not you will find it. Your obsessive thinking has actually frozen you in your tracks and you are currently not moving on the path to acheive your goals.

Other shroomerites are right when they tell you to let it go, and that you are trying too hard. Particularly when it comes to something intangible like love, you can't make it happen. It is nothing you are doing.

But you need to free your own head from the patterns of obsessive thinking. There are a lot of ways to do this, but none of them are anything less than very difficult. I try meditation, drugs, exercise and filling my life with pointless busywork. Anyway, I really think you would benefit if you focused your energies on something else for awhile, a temporary hiatus from the goal of love to pursue some other goal.

From the link posted above ( http://cla.calpoly.edu/~bmori/syll/311syll/Lovetypes.html ):

Quote:
3. MANIA (Possessiveness and Intense Dependency)

The constructed ideal of this type of lover is obsessed with his or her love object. A manic lover may be unable to sleep, eat, or even think logically around the loved one. The manic lover has peaks of excitement, but also depths of depression, with very few periods without a high or low.

This type of lover is jealous to an extent that might be described as irrational. A manic lover cannot tolerate loss of contact with a love object, even for short periods of time, and is distressed by a lack of the lover’s presence or anticipated interaction. A manic lover is typically crushed by real or fancied rejection, possibly to the point of suicidal ideation.

The manic lover often tried to manipulate the behaviors or feelings of the loved one, but because he or she seems to be bereft of logic, often succeeds only in looking foolish in his or he own eyes. For example, a manic lover may tell their loved one that they should spend a few days apart to think objectively about their relationship, and then go into a state of panic because the partner cannot be located during that period. Manic lovers do not tolerate separation at all well.

The manic lover has a tendency to review his or her abortive love affairs and speculate about what when wrong that terminated them. Manic lovers frequently have sexual problems as well as problems in handling other forms of intimate interaction. Because of their high level or anxiety, manic lovers would be expected to have problems related to anxiety, such as vaginismus or premature ejaculation.

Mania is probably associated with low self-esteem and a poor self concept. Because of this, manic persons are typically not attractive to persons who have good self concepts and high self esteem. They become burdensome to more self-sufficient others. If they are rejected by them, their anxieties intensify, making them even less attractive.

Love like that will rarely work out in the long run. You should start loving yourself and being more confident, and the rest will naturally fall into place. You (like I once did) think that a relationship will fix all your problems. It won't. In fact, it'll bring in a host of new ones.

If the other person doesn't love you back the same way you love them, you just have to move on. It's A LOT easier said than done, but that's just how it is.

Gluke bastid gave the best advice in this entire thread so far:
Quote:

It becomes a problem when you think too much. When you start to think about that partner and how life CAN be with them. In your head it becomes perfect. Your dream world. Your dream life. Nothing ever goes wrong in dreams, but unfortunately real life rarely works out this way. Things are rarely in your favor, especially when you get others involved.

The only person you can really depend on is yourself. People change overnight. Physical attributes, religious/spiritual beliefs, etc can change instantly. People get into accidents, they lose their face, they lose limbs, they die, etc.

If by "romantic love" you mean the flowers/chocolate teenage stuff, I would say it IS real.. but it's not permanent, and it's nowhere like in the movies. It's only temporary and is present for nothing more than reproduction.

I've noticed that when I'm depressed I dwell severely on past relationship mistakes. "If only I..." or "why did I..." I usually get over these things after getting over my depression. Of course, this is very difficult to do.

If it makes you feel any better, you're definitely not alone. Time does heal all wounds.

There are a lot of posts about the problems that love creates, but that does not mean that it is a "blind alley" or simply "for fools". In any experience I encounter I look for the lessons that I have been taught by that experience. I am a very sensitive and emotional person. I could very easily fall in love with just about anyone (or everyone), but I choose romantic love. To explore an individual takes time, patience and energy. To love one person, to truly get to know them, is an incredible endeavor that I feel could take a lifetime (or beyond). There is infinite love and contentment in my heart. I choose to share forms of that love with my lover, forms with my friends, my family and everyone that I meet. There are selfish reasons for people to seek romantic love. There are selfish reasons for people to engage in polygamy. Neither path is right or wrong, but either is open for any of us to choose. Is monogamy a loss of personal freedom? I used to think so, but now I recognize that it is only a choice. Freedom is not something that we can gain or lose. It is immeasurable. We are as free as we allow ourselves to be in our minds.

And yes, love causes problems. Problems let us know we are alive. The only people with no problems are those lying in a graveyard. The *problem* is not the problem, but the perception of the one encountering it. Life is a beautiful struggle. When I am quiet and observe the world around me it resounds with one message: grow! I challenge you not to. I do not believe that it can be done. Challenges and problems produce experience. Experience facilitates growth.

If love is what you feel you lack -- look inside. Love is there. Perhaps you are so distracted with this concept of loving another that you are missing the lessons of your current state? Love is not a goal, it is a process. It is an energy. It is an experience. It is a constant lesson that persists.
