Just water.
Hot will get it going faster.
Cold will be slower.
Room temp works fine

NO NO NO and NO! You have to freeze the water, then without melting it, you must boil it, then sit till room temp. J/k, sry, I had to go off I couldnt help it.

I've found that if I don't use cold water, my rye starts to sprout at a 24 hour soak. Not good.

Rinse your grains very well in the hottest tap water you have until the water pours off clear, then fill the pan with hot tap water to begin the soak. Add a pot of coffee if desired. A teaspoon of gypsum per gallon of soak water works to prevent clumping later. I have never had grains soaking that spouted. Perhaps it's the coffee?

By starting with hot water, the grains absorb more moisture, and bacteria is encouraged to germinate and grow, which makes it easier to kill in the PC. Also note the rinse is much more effective at removing dirt and chaff prior to the soak than after.
