Grains in half pint jars?
    #2543184 - 04/09/04 01:56 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

All the grain recipes I've found are for quart or pint jars but I would assume one could just halve the pint recipe and get a viable mixture for half pint jars right? I'm going to be experimenting with fractional sterilization and a smaller size would waste less substrate (and incidentally, I don't have any larger jars). Would a particular grain be more suited to this sizing down procedure?

I did fractional steralization as an experiment with 3 1/2 pint rye jars last time around.I soaked for about 18 hours in the fridge drained for about 10 minutes, then loaded in jars with pollyfill lids about 2/3 of the way up. I boiled/steamed them for 40 minutes and left in the pot to cool for 24 hours, then reapeated the steaming for another 40 minutes and again let sit for 24 hours, then i steamed a 3rd time for 60 minutes, and let cool in the pot overnight.
I had a 100% sucess rate with the 3 rye jars.no problems whats so ever.so for all those that knock the procedure it does work.
I havent tried it since though and i have never tried other grains,so i couldnt comment on them.

Ahh, now that's what I wanted to hear :tongue2:  Did you just half the standard rye recipe or compensate in some way for the potential moisture loss from the second and third steaming?  Also I've read it's important to keep the jars warm inbetween steaming but you didn't explicitly mention anything like that so perhaps it's not crucial?

i did it just exactly like i said above,i didnt use a recipe,i soaked it 18 hours, then drained, then did the process.I didnt have any excessive moisture loss.It worked great exactly the way i did it.
As far as keeping it warm, well once they were done,i kept them right in the post, and i covered the pot with a heavy towel and also wrapped one around it.7 hours later when i went to bed the pot was still slightly warm. Also it was the middle of winter,so my heat was at like 70-75 all night.did the trick i did nothing else to it.I didnt have my incubator set up at the time, but if i had,i may have considered sticking the whole pot right in the incubator at 86 degrees, heck it certainly wouldnt hurt.I just like to keep all my jars in the pot untill they are cool,so less chance of contams.
I did add a small amount of moist verm to the rye mix though,i figure that probably helped with the moisture issue.I think it also helped that i only drained for 10 minutes.
