Nice coco fiber substrate recipe

Hi enthusiasts.

I thought I would share some of my successes using coco fiber substrates.

I have used brf/verm substrates, plain rye kernels, and other grains. I got a big block of coco fiber for casings, and I decided to try it in substrate because I hate vermiculite. I successfully colonized brf/verm, rye, and coco fiber/millet seeds side by side, and the coco fiber/millet seed combo was by far the fastest, achieving full colonization 3 or 4 days before the other substrates.

I boiled the millet seeds for 5 minutes, then let them cool for a few hours. Then I drained them (did not wash them!), and mixed them about 1:4 with soaked coco fiber. Millet grains are quite small, and the boiling process cooked them a bit, so that they had a consistency like couscous. The whole mix had a slimy quality, of the 'melted' millet goo covering the coco fiber. After PC'ing and innoculating, growth appeared fast, and was extremely ropy and 'stretchy' looking. I would guess that the very-fast growth was due to:

1. The fluffy airiness of the substrate - coco fiber doesn't compress and get lumpy like vermiculite/flour. It was very loose.
2. The 'slime' that was all over the coco fiber was probably a nice sugary pathway all through the substrate that the mycelium just LOVED!

I don't know how the nutrition content is for cake growing, as I just use quart jars for spawning bulk (I grow edibles). As spawn, it worked very well.

Anyway, for those people wanting to try a nice, clean, vermiculite-free substrate, I highly recommend this one.

yeah I noticed that slime also. Mostly on the bottom of my fire ants casing cause he used glad ware tupperwares so he could see through by removing the foil. But soon as he fliped the casing over the slime either evaporated or was consumed and growth returned. My post was deleted by accident during the changing of servers about koh samui and coco substrate about too many pins and no further growth. My fireants realized that the humidity dome was warped and not providing as much humidity as before. Once humidity was increased hundreds of pins turned to hundreds of mushies. Only problem with coco is moisture content. It seems like its way to dry when you make it then when it almost fully colonized all the moisture builds at the bottom causing growth to slow down same with the interior. The reason for this was too much substrate in one bag limit the size of the bag 1/2 to a 1/4 full and all will be good. I used multiple variations of this style and found that it is easy to add too much nutrient. The less the better for ex. wet your fiber with straw water cut with 30-40% straw and add a little grain and that is more then plenty nutrient for you substrate. When you start using flours it seems like the fungus has an od on the nutrients or it could be the ph but both are directly related to each other.
