Ryche didn't invent the use of birdseed as a substrate, I remember when he was on here asking about using it, I'm sure those archives are gone by now. If I remember correctly, Workman helped him out.

Tell the people what they want to know and you would not need any help. Cut, paste, regurgetate - cool.

You can do a search, you will find it.
Interesting to read how Ryche evolved.

casing layers are supposed to be non-nutritious. im pretty sure gro-brick is as well.

HQ didnt sterilize it, just poured hot/boiled water over it as a prolly unnecessary precaution. (makes it absorb much quicker, and looks cool when it steams). no contams at all.

just be sure not to get ones with added trich., its been reported found in pet bedding coir and other brands apparently. gro-brick brand does not have added trich.

also, someone posted a while ago somewhere that it cannot be hydrated and kept/stored- they reported that the hydrated coir kept in a cabinet was likely the source of weevils (!!) eww... so use what you need. (cutting the brick/breaking it was impossible for HQ. she soaked one end in a bit of water, and sawed off the wet pieces... almost all could be taken off easily this way. the hot water's good for this too- it soaks it up really quickly so you can tell how much more hot water you need to get the coir you need.)

You can also use it in place of the brf therefore it is nutritious.

Y_S.. Are you saying that one could use Gro-brick as a substrate by itself? Coir is the fiberous stuff on the outside of a coconut, I doubt it'd be chock full of nutrients so i'm not sure about that; I did a lycos search for 'coir' and a popular use for it is in weaving floor mats.. would YOU eat a floormat?

wow, hearing mcman say this changes everything.

so, has it been bollocks then about casing layers having to be non-nutritive? or is it some quirk of coir?

As for later flushes, I have been deep scratching after the first flush and re-applying a THIN layer of coco fiber. Re-pinning begins in 3 - 5 days.

After cleaning the pins, deep scratching and re-applying a thin casing layer, should it go back into incubation until it colonizes the new casing layer? Or right back into fruiting?

TIA, AFOAF is at this stage right now.
