*Coco Fiber, have to love the stuff**

SO, I order a giant boulder of Gro-Brick coco fiber a few weeks back. Ran out of verm, was sick and tired of driving around looking everywhere for it and having no luck, and grew tired of perlite bottom casing drying out my casings, so I tried using coco fiber as the bottom casing layer as well as using it on cakes, using the PF double ended casing TEK and using coco fiber instead of verm. The results have been fantastic on the casings and even more so on the cakes. The mycellium actually colonizes the coco fiber, and after a week or so, there are pins on the bottom layer of the cakes! Pins in the jar lid! Have to love coco fiber! No contams also!

How did you treat the fiber after rehydrating it? Did you sterilize it?

No sterilization is required with the Gro-Brick brand. My biggest challenge was getting a knife that would cut chunks of the brick. LOL! Just cut a chunk off, stick in a bowl with water and let sit for 15 minutes. The stuff is truely amazing!
Toss out the Jiffy Mix and get some coco fiber!

If you go to someplace like PetSmart, they should have it. "Bed-A-Beast" is one brand name. It is the same size as a brick and should only be about 2 bucks.

i think if you check McMans earlier post, he did a lot using coco fibers and is quite experienced with it,

Only the GroBrick brand is okay without sterilization. Pet bedding has contems, or so I've heard more than once. Get GroBrick at any good nursery,

I've used bed-a-beast with some success. One complaint I have is that the shit is real hard to keep wet, heavy misting is needed until pinning (you need to keep it soaked)

I pasteurized my bed-a-beast from petsmart. What I did was rehydrate a chunk, squeezed the excess moisture out (to the correct moisture that casings should be). I then placed this shit into a pot, and then a placed that pot into a pot half full of water. A double boiler in other words. Kept the temp between 160-180 F for a good hour. Took off heat and let cool. That way, when your stuff is done pasteurizing, its already to the correct moisture content. Just spoon it out. Whoever thought up the pillowcase in steam bath idea was stoned. This is the simplist way to pasteurize anything. Anyone else do it this way?

If anyone has an earl may garden center near them, they sell huge bags of horticultural coco fibre for about $8. Very easy to use since it isn't in the brick form.

What I mean by "pins in the jar lid" is that the mycellium from the cake colonized the cocfiber that I put in the jar lid for moisture, and a week or so later, started pinning.

Another good spot for coco fiber is www.homeharvest.com. These guys are consumer friendly as well.
I'd still try sterilizing though. Simply because you don't know who touched the grow brick before you. Or what it had been exposed to in the store and/or warehouse.

My friend used Bed-O-Beast from Petsmart. He boiled 4 quarts of water for 1/2 hour and then placed the whole brick in the pot and let it sit with the lid on until cooled. He then squeezed out the excess water/ mixed it with oyster shell and cased his container of Thai cakes. He got 4 excellent flushes with no sign of contams. He only misted when the surface began to look dry. BTW another good place to get Gro-Brick is at www.wormsway.com. It is an excellent hydroponics store with locations in Indiana, Missouri, Florida and Massachusetts. I highly recommend it to those who like to grow other things as well.
