It is alot fluffier and holds alot more water then other mixes, as well as not being as prone to contamination. The fluffiness allows more crossing of hyphal strands which results in dykaryotic tissue which forms pins/mushrooms. The better the ability for the casing soil to support this crossing the better the pin set. And with more water holding capabilities mushrooms can grow larger and you can mist less often.

myc. just rips thru a casing layer of coir, very quickly and evenly in most cases... the more quickly myc. can take over a casing layer successfully and without help, the less likely contams can set in to the top. it comes off more easily when cleaning stems than verm does- it can be hard to get that last verm flake off, but coir seems to be easily removable when the flush is harvested. finally, coir doesnt have to be pretreated/sterilized/pasteurized/buffered etc... just use boiling/boiled water to rehydrate it and youre good to go (let it cool before applying of course). unlike other casing mixes which can require sterilization or additional ph concerns... which makes one less step to worry about.

Petsmart has bricks of the stuff for $4.99 US. Its called Bed-A-Beast and its working very well so far (although i have had some green mold but i doubt its from the coco fiber)

actually, some coir brands are treated with trich (the green mold)... green mold contams could very possibly be blamed on treated coir. some have reported the bed a beast is treated with trich, but im not certain since ive never used the bedding kind. gro-brick brand is safe and the one many recommend... im sure there are others people could list for you.
