Possible Amanita Muscaria var. formosa
    #6322299 -

Hello,
I'm a new member so please bare with me. I thought I successfully posted this but I can't find the post anywhere.

I wasn't aware any active A. muscarias were in my area, but earlier this afternoon I found some rather suspicious candidates I think might be formosas. Any help would be great. Thanks:

Habitat: -edge of woods/near road in pine straw
-northern Louisiana, USA

Gills: -white
-crowded
-spore color unknown

Stem: -white
-3 in. to 6 or 7 in. height
-1/2 to 1 in diameter
-remnants of the veil remain on the stem
-bulbus at the root

Caps: -before the rain the caps were a more vibrant reddish-orange color, but afterwards quickly faded to the color in the pictures
-diameters ranging from 1.5 in. to 7 in.
-white spots on the cap
-convex to flat

Miscellaneous: All of the 8 mushrooms were found in a 10 foot radius. There is no overwhelming or even noticable odor and no bruising either.

Any input, specifically look-alikes, would be much appreciated. Thanks!

They are indeed Amanita muscaria for sure. I've only seen the var. muscaria where I live, but I guess it could well be formosa

Yes, those are Amanita muscaria. As far as the variation goes, Id say they are more red than yellow.

Nice finds, especially when you found them in Louisiana.

So, I shouldn't have anything to worry about other than going overkill with these specimens, right?

Thanks for your quick response.

Otherie they can kill you.

No, he'll just get sick if he eats them raw.

Some people, even after drying or cooking A. muscaria say that they felt no effects other than nausea, or that the effects were not worth the hours of nausea.

Know that you are likely to feel sick if you eat those, and be sure to dry them or cook them first.

indeed. MY muscaria experience was not a pleasent one. I prepared them by heat drying them (cooking them) then ground them and made a nasty ass tea. I was very nausious for about an hour and a half before falling asleep. I was still nausious for a couple hours after waking. Had some pretty wild dreams, but wasn't worth the sickness. I suspect however, that the ones growing in my area (formosas) are high muscarine and low in psychoactives. I stick to photography now when it comes to muscaria.
