Psilocybe cyanescens (wild collection from Belgium): stems to cardboard to woodchips * 2
    #20746526 - 10/24/14 09:00 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Back in 2006 I discovered a patch of Psilocybe cyanescens growing in a cemetary in the province of East-Flanders, Belgium. I have reported this on the Shroomery message board before:

Bluing wooddwellers from Northern Belgium in Ye Olde Europe (28 nov 2006)
Ps. cyanescens in Belgium: the very last of the season, after 2 days of freezing (29 nov 2010)

The mushrooms have been recurring ever since. Last year I took the fresh stems of a couple of healthy looking large specimens, and chopped them up as fine as I could with a potato knife.

The stem pulp was placed between damp sheets of grey corrugated cardboard prepared in the traditional manner (remove the outer layer and soak in hot water to remove glue, press them with hands to ensure the sheets are damp but not too wet). No bleach or H2O2 were used at any point during the process. These sheets were placed in a closed tupperware box and kept in the dark at room temperature. After a week it was evident that mycelium was growing on the cardboard, and it took about a month for the mycelium to completely colonize the cardboard.

No commercial woodchips product was available at the time, nor was a shredding tool available, so woodchips were prepared by hand using a pruning shear. The twigs and branches used were mainly willow but there were also some from apple, pear and plum trees. Care was taken to obtain roughly equivalent amount of small, medium-sized and larger chips. The bark was not removed. The chips were placed in a bucket and hot, near-boiling water was added. After 48 hours the chips were drained well, placed in a large, sturdy re-usable type plastic shopping bag. Air was pressed out and the bag was closed with a couple of clothespins to allow for some gas-exchange, and it was left like this for the rest of the year in the dark and at temperatures fluctuating between room temperature and 35°C.

Around mid-september the bag was opened, and it appeared that the mycelium had completely and thoroughly colonized the woodchips. The bag was placed outside in a sheltered place outside of reach of direct sunlight, the top of the bag closed with clothespins in a "tent"-like fashion. October was unusually hot, but now at night temperatures have started dropping below 10°C, and pinning was witnessed:

I have carefully transplanted the colonised woodchips, making sure not to break or damage the mycelial network, to a box containing a mixture of commercial and hand-cut (with the pruning shear) beech wood chips which were soaked in water for 48 hours prior.

The pins are slowly developing due to the cold weather. Apparently according to the weather report daytime temperatures are expected to rise again the coming days, so I expect them to grow a bit faster then.

You might find it a bit boring or not very spectacular, these couple of mushrooms slowly ripening, but the last days it rained and a lot of new pins emerged, so I think the next flush will be more prolific.

Some more pics from today, looks like the first flush is maturing.

There is some mildew on the bark of some woodchips, but the mycelium doesn't seem to mind much. It is clearly colonizing fresh woodchips even while fruiting.

I've been using the yearly updates from Google Streetview to keep track of some oysters I grew on some tree stumps

I appreciate the amount of time and effort you put into this and it's nice seeing that you're getting the rewards.

Thanks, I hope my work can convince some doubters out there, that an elaborate setup for sterile work isn't necessary per se, that you can grow some species (the woodlovers) very easily. Really I remember cutting up whole stems (not even just the stem butts) with a potato knife. When you put the pulp between cardboard, after a week at room temperature mycelial growth is visible. It is as easy as mixing the colonized cardboard with freshly prepared woodchips in a bag, and just forgetting about it. It can be done literally in the field by any aspiring McGyver-type of person.

lel... I have been doing the same thing with ps. semilanceate in gardens and fields. Spraying the grass and cow turds with spawn suspension, feeding cows grass doused in spore solution... I'm sure it will work if conditions are right....
