Salvia black patches!

Ok, so i ran into another problem, the salvia leaves are patching black now!
(I got this plant last week). I took it out of the humidity chamber for these pictures, maybe I have to change the pots? bigger pots? bad soil? over watering? too much humidity? Please let me know what you think!

looks like a soil issue, too moist maybe?

It vermiculite and black soil.. thats all.. i water it everyday.

vermiculite and black soil + daily water
= WAY WAY WAY WAY to moist.

repot with loose soil, use pearlite instead of vermiculite, you arent growing swamp plants here.

so, i mix black soil with some perlite? what ration? does anyone else have any comments? thanks

personally , i would go easy on the black soil too.

salvia likes its soil to dry out between waterings, you want rather good drainage.

vermiculite does the OPPOSITE of this

Luckily salvia is an extremely forgiving plant.
Definitely a soil issue, every couple of days watering is fine for this plant.

i always eyeball it.
just watever looks slightly crunchy and airy, but holds some mousture,
a little organic compost is good too

my opinion on this is that its not humid enough. Do you happen to have a humidity gauge?

I feel the #1 reason for salvia deaths in this country is lack of proper humidity.

Everyone is always saying saliva is so forgiving...I call BS. but thats just me.

I feel it HAS to have HIGH humdity and it will take all it can get. Think of saliva's leaves are like ROOTS. Spray water on these leaves and they suck all the water up just watching it for a few mins ...i don't know of any other plant that does that personaly.

and a humidity tent might not cut it either, cuts down on air and sunlight.

to do it right you need a humidifer right next to it.

well, low humidity tends to cause leaf tips to die off,
these ones are spotting at the base of leaves.

do i really have to take a picture of my plant? trust me humidity causes that too. And we are in winter time alot of places...and humidity drops very low this time of year. so low it almost killed my plants,

Prior to winter my plants were flurishing being misted daily

one of my plants had about 6 leaves on it, and thats about the point where i had tried lots of water, and very dry...i had tryed spraying the leaves and not spraying the leaves....so with my 6 leaves and black stems i told myself i need to check humidity.

my humidity didn't register on my digital gauge. by time i got my humidifyer and everything set up i had 2 leaves left. I thought i had lost her...about 1 week later i had 2 new leaves bright and green.

now here is an interesting thing i found out...when a saliva plant drops a mostly green leaf it turns black after a few days.

if you cut the leaf off it will stay green.......so im wondering if this is a possible gauge to tell if you need higher humidity...

im thinking they don't always turn black when they drop off...only when they are really thursty they suck them dry and they drop...and turn black.

I do not care if anyone says that they are not an easy plant. I KNOW that this plant is one of the easiest ethno to grow. I have raised many plants a low humidity (50%) and they came out absolutely fine. It does not HAVE to have high humidity despite what people may say.....

Ok, the guy i got them from told me the cutting were used to almost not humidity. he told me to take them out of the humidity chamber!

apparently this is a hard plant to grow since it seems every post in here regarding it is from people who have them dieing/problems.

and 50% isn't exactly low humidity.

im curious what high humidity is 120-130%?

lastly i wouldn't exactly trust a person who is selling things...because if it dies you'll just be buying another.

i took some pics of my plant for comparison ill post it up shortly

hope this helps and at the very least everyone should now know "exactly" what a low humidity does to a salvia plant.....the new good green growth is from me putting a humidifier on it. and it happened in roughly a week give or take.

I used a mixture of cactus potting mix, soil, and a bit of hpoo. Also you may want to feed your plants with fertilizer that is high in Nitrogen. Usually Stern's Miracid during the winter and a fish emulsion during the Summer. Feed your plant after every 4th water or so during the Winter and after 3rd watering during Summer.
