My First Salvia Growlog
    #1278860 -

Hello everybody! This is not only my first time growing Salvia, but also my first time with a grow log. I'm doing this as much for myself as for any of you people. I have two plastic pots about 8" in diameter at the top. And please bear with me on the pictures, it's a $40 digital camera, there isn't even a flash, so what do you expect?
Two rooted cuttings arrived in the mail today, and here's what I did:

-I mixed roughly equal amounts of perlite and Master Nursery Potting Soil Plus and filled the pots just enough to cover the drainage holes.
-Then I carefully placed the rooted cuttings, along with the soil they came with, in the center and sprinkled soil around it to just under the first node.
-I then watered with some pure spring water (not necessary, I'm sure, but it never hurts) and misted the leaves and sides and top of the tank.
-I'm using an incandescent grow bulb to light it, although you can't see in the pictures.

Until they reveal to me their true names, I'm calling them Sally (left) and Maria (right):

Here's Maria:

And just for fun, what the chamber looks like with the top on:

It's an old shroom grow chamber, but it hasn't been used for such purposes in some time.

Questions? Comments? I'll update every week or so, or whenever it seems like something Important happens.

Great post! But could someone move this to ethnobotanical, or grow log? It would go great there.

Yeah, i wasn't sure where to put it. Grow Logs is specifically for Shrooms, i think, but maybe the Garden is the place. I leave it up to the mods' discretion.

2/10 Day 6:
I took these pictures after putting the plants in their new home. I was concerned that in the humidity chamber they weren't getting enough fresh air circulation, so I constructed a humidity tent using a bookcase and a painter's tarp. See picture:

alsoo, here's Maria again:

and Sally again:

2/13 Day 9
I noted today that Sally has root rot. There are also black tips on almost every leaf. I replanted both girls tonight. Now the soil composition is 4 parts soil 1.5 part vermiculite and 1.5 part perlite.

2/14 Day 10
Sally's root rot is threatening to consume the whole plant, so I cut her. The part without root rot is now in a cup of water, trying to reroot the cutting. Browning on leaves on both plants continues, both girls have lost several leaves each.

2/16 Day 12
The Sally cutting now has root rot. So does Maria. I have failed. It's so much easier to take care of mushrooms. Or maybe it's just that I have more experience with them. i've grown cacti before, but they're extremely resilient. Not like Salvia.

Stuff like that happens to all of us at some point in our cultivation escapades.  :smirk: Lessons learned i guess. Too bad it had to happen with a plant you have to order cuttings for. Next time, make sure you put a lil bit of vermiculate in the soil mix and use pots with good drainage.

too much moisture, eh? my guess is it wasn't so much too much as highly variable amount of moisture. I'd open the tent and the guage would always read 92% RH (it's not too accurate at high numbers, but it read a perfect 75% when i put it in a bag with wet salt). After I examined, and fanned my plants the RH would be down to like 65%. I thought it would be a smart idea to humidify with perlite, so maybe that caused too much himidity. Also the soil.

Anyone wanna send me a cutting so I can try again?
