wtf is up with my salvia
    #2629858 - 05/03/04 12:45 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I've had this salvia for a year or so, I pruned it back at the end of last summer when it looked like this:

Then when I was away on vacation for xmas it didn't get watered and all the new growth on it wilted. I gave it some water when I got back and kept it around and it recovered and started growing again but the new growth isn't that nice dark green shade like it was before, even though I've been fertilizing it pretty regularly and repotted it a couple months ago.

Seems to be growing a lot slower than before too. Anyone have any ideas why this could be? I was thinking it might be a pH or salt problem, it was in the same pot/dirt I got it in for a long time. I'll probably try flushing the soil out in the next few days. Maybe I should just take a cutting and start a new plant?

dark green salvia leaves represent greenhouse humidity conditions, light green indicates dryer atmosphere. A light green leaf will turn dark in high humidity but a dark green leaf will not turn light in low humidity.
let the soil mix be 1/3 perlite, 1/3vermiculite & 1/3 organic potting soil and water daily, mist 2 or 3 times a day and it will be excellent, but it does not look bad either - maybe rootbound.

a bigger pot will definitely stimulate it to grow (wake it up from the roots) and it will be a great excuse to change the soil.

hrmm, I don't know if I believe that...

the plant was never in a greenhouse or increased humidity, in fact it was grown just like any other houseplant in dry eastern WA all summer long. humidity over there commonly gets down into the teens or lower. the leaves on the new growth after I moved it over there were a lot smaller than before I moved it, but were still a nice dark green. Where I am now, the humidity is generally much higher than in E. WA, yet the leaves are yellowish...

elevation where I had it all summer is about 1000'.

where it is now is just above sea level, I'd say maybe around 200' give or take a hundred. Last spring when I had it down here it grew great, nice big dark green leaves, w/o any added humidity.

then all I can say is it is rootbound and needs to be repotted
btw
humidity in washington state is pretty good for salvia plants especially in summer.

I repotted it back in march.

Eastern and western washington climates are VERY different. Where I was in E. WA is right in the rain shadow of the cascades, practically a desert. Under 10" of rain a year. Over here it's something like 40".

It had been in a smaller pot and growing nicely for about 10 straight months before that, it's hard to believe it's already root bound again after 2 months and hardly any new growth...

I think I'll just root a new cutting.

Just checked to make sure and it doesn't look rootbound to me

did you use the same soil to repot it? if not, maybe the new soil is missing an essential nute...

thanks for the compliment mr. mush , you shoulda seen the mother plants, they were even bigger and just as green.  Got the clone from another shroomerite who got his clone from yet another, he had a few that size and larger around his house when I picked mine up . Anyway as for your question, I didn't do anything special at all, no humidity tent, no spraying, no nothing.  Just watered and fertilized regularly and let it get light in the window.  Same thing as I've been doing lately, which is why I'm thinking it's a pH or nutrient problem...

I don't know what kind of soil it was originally in when I got it, but I just used store bought soil when I repotted it, should have all the nutes it needs, but maybe not, I'll have to find a list of deficiency symptoms and check it out...

the soil held together
a) because it is root bound
b) because it is too dry

it's not root bound as you can see in the pics.  It's also not too dry, I took it out of the pot carefully so the soil wouldn't be disturbed, I let the soil dry out on top between waterings and always have.

if the problem was that basic I wouldn't be posting about it here, believe me, I'm no stranger to growing things .  As you can see, it was doing fine last year, now it's not, it was repotted recently and I haven't been treating it any different than I ever have.  Thanks for trying to help though...

I know virtually nothing about salvia itself, but that difference in colouring reminds me of what happens to camelias, rhododendrons etc when their soil gets too neutral....they like acid soil. Perhaps you should check with someone experienced in salvia cultivation as to whether they also are an acid loving plant, it could be the compost you used was too neutral (most are, you have to buy specific composts for camelias etc).

good luck

Edit: Just checked, mints like a normal rich soil, and most sages like a rich alkaline soil, so it's not a lack of acid

they do like more space for the roots.
last year it reached enormous proportions for that pot - congrats.
The root binding will be hair fine roots - not honkin noodles.
a bigger pot will do wonders.
and you are right both look good you are doing plenty right!
