My poor salvia cutting (rot?)
    #2626297 - 05/01/04 04:14 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I got a salvia cutting a couple weeks ago (it's in a humidity tent in a cup of spring water), and the edges of the leaves are blackening and curling... and I just found another brown spot today .  Is this rot?
If so, how can I treat it?  Are there effective non-chemical options?  If not, where can I get a (cheap as possible) fungicide?
I am very disappointed in the retailer I got it from, because this definitely came along with the plant (it was unreasonably expensive and took forever to be delivered as well).

few things are going on, either too much water, too much heat, or ferts.

I recomend cutting back on water... salvia loves water, however one of my plants prefers a dryer hotter envirment for whatever reason.

but.. untill you find out whats wrong... move your light, and lower the humidity.. and don't mist the leaves as much. (not that you are... but i'm guessing your loving your plant to death)

Salvia can recover some heavy shit... so I wouldn't worry too much,

right now My biggest suggestion is to let the soil dry out a bit to see if that helps. as it really sounds like a too much water problem.

It's not yet in soil... it's been in a cup of water.
I have no lights close to it... the humidity tent may be keeping the humidity too high?
It has some nice rootlets, so I'm planning to pot it on Monday or Tuesday (which will be two weeks from when I put into the WATER).

Edges of the stem are turning brown/black as well, and the two little leaves growing in are black on the upper halves.  All the black areas are curled, dry and crispy (and crumble if touched).

I have a plant that has suffered leaf black
and anothert that had a fungus.
the one with fungus had whitefly and the two phenomena are associated (bugs and fungus - they each live off the leavings of the other).
if you don't have tiny white flies I dontly think you have fungus.

for leaf black (and fungus) I use a scissors and cut it off (not the stem though)

I cut half leaf's off, edges off - whererever the black is young leaves and old leaves too - I presume it is a circulation problem that spreads on the leaf because of collapse of surrounding circulation tissue from variance in something environmental.
My plant does very well now (still sometimes a leaf wil have a hole in it for no reason or an edge will dry or a tip. I pinch off those black tips and eat them.

Also I use *distilled* water only for watering (not sure about sprouting).

when you get it into soil (once it has roots) use a mix
1/3 perlite 1/3 vermiculite and 1/3 organic potting soil.
Also try not to be mad or impatient near your plant (a great habit that sperads beyond the garden).

this is a good time of year to begin to grow things.
a few months ago the heating systems in northern climes were difficulty for fledgeling salvias.

From the FAQ portion written by Salvia_England:

My Salvia is getting black edges, what's wrong?

That is rather normal; if your humidity is staying within optimal range and the brown/black edges don';t start consuming the entire leaf then there is nothing to worry about. Simply remove the black edges by trimming the leaf back a little.

Consistent humidity prevents black edges.
