I agree with him entirely...

Religion, while there are certain aspects that are great (ie the ten commandments) and can provide an individual with a basic moral map...

however, the overwhelming majority of these people preach one thing, and do the complete opposite. For example, Jesus was said to be an all-accepting pacifist... promoting nothing but peace, love, humility, giving, turning the other cheek, etc. Basically, Jesus was the first hippie.

Unfortunately, the religious masses do much of the opposite... not all of course, but farrr too many to be considered deviant from the group norm... bigotry IS the norm more often than not. Religion yesterday had a purpose; it was the opiate of the masses as Karl Marx put it. Today, it causes more harm than good... but people cling onto it with blind faith.

and yes, he's right, these people are completely irrational... we're told about this omnipotent god figure when we're really young, and many of us continue to believe it without questioning for the rest of our lives. and it just makes sense that a rather emotionally/mentally weak species, humans, would want to create this illusion that we're here for a reason... that all of this has a purpose. Hell, we'd all hope that... I know I would... but reason leaves too much open to just accept such a notion blindly.

I'm sick of typing... bbl heh

i would rather say that fundamentalism is the disorder.

the using of past methods and application of beliefs regarding the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe to justify decisions in the present world.

because the world today is never what it was yesterday..

so there is nothing inherently wrong with religion as an organized entity in itself imo, as long as dualism does not encourage one-sided perspectives.

as a matter of my own opinion once again, any order can become dangerous if it does not balance itself with chaos and occasional discord. shaking the belief structures up a bit will bring things back into harmonic resonance.

so it all depends on how religion handles the present moment, regress into fundamentalism is what needs to be looked out for. :mushroom2:

Yes, some people cling onto religion blindly.  I won't disagree with you on that for one second.  These are the people who only understand their religion intellectually.  Then you have those who understand it experientially, and that's not religion, that's spirituality, and can be accompanied by religious practices.

Don't accept it blindly then   I've spent a good 1/3 of my life now searching for reasons and answers, and have found many.  People accept it blindly because they don't want to put in the work or effort that it takes.  It's not easy facing things that make you uncomfortable, or surrendering to the unknown.  But you have to go out on the limb, because that's where the fruit grows.

I somewhat agree with this quote: "Religion is a bureaucracy between man and God."

However, I would personally compare religion to psychedelics(which for me have a strong connection to my faith). Religion, if used responsibly, can provide great opportunities for personal growth. Used irresponsibly, it can be extremely dangerous.

*sigh* I'd like it if we could just vote "no," the way we do with ballot measures. Then each candidate would have to have enough "yes" votes to counterbalance their "no" votes, and would also have to have enough remaining to outnumber the other candidates' remaining "yes" votes.

I think we should make it illegal for politicians to associate with each other in any way. The concept of a political party is nonsense, and each individual candidate should be elected solely on their perspective and how they will act on specific issues. I think that interaction between politicians should be prohibited, and that they should basically serve their term in an isolated area wherein they are connected to some sort of network that would provide them information and their ability to make choices.

that would surely be a more ethical approach. political mob rule needs to transcended,

and this "whole nation under one god" kind of thing as well.
