Update on my Morel cultures
    #6241095 -

UPDATE: 2008 (Whoa little horsey!)
{
I've already pointed out that morel mycelia will do nothing but eat and eat and eat and go into a state of limbo and do nothing but sometimes grow a little more, well nothing happened with "Those Jars" from 2007,
My 2008 jars have a "True" nutrient poor layer and I got the orange granules, about 1mm to 1 cm in diameter and still growing!
}

Well I've determined without a doubt that good sclerotial development happens when the nutrient source is above the substrate (I still need to confirm this!), and Lazlo=Hotnuts is right, the sclerotia will form on the surface, but as small white to rust colored aggregates, or otherwise what the rest of you "experienced" growers have seen as the white to rusty colored powdery crusty looking formations. PERIOD! thats all the good info I had. the rest from last year was Horse poo!

Sounds neat, what size is "good sized?" Do you have pictures of this?

Have you seen Brainbreath's thread in thenook edibles forum that shows sclerotia growing in peat moss substrate? They seem to get about an inch long and have some nice depth too...

Brainbreath is my freaking hero. What did me make again, something like one ton of morel spawn to work into one two-acre and one three-acre plot? I take my hat off for his dedication.

FYI I was hoping to see some pics on his results of his 'super inoculation' but apparently he was in jail at the time of fruiting. Very, very unfortunate I would say. Hopefully they will linger for him so he can get some more crops though...

About an inch in diameter in the soil.
I don't have a camera yet, too expensive.
Plus I thought my dad was getting one but he
kind of blew that off. I'm sure if I get definitive
results he might see the worth of it and
go in half on one. Not only to mention he'll
realize the potential of a successful grow and
support me a little more on this.
I saw the Nook thread, and he had grain mixed up
with the potting soil, and you can't do that.
You have to keep the substrate separate from the nutrients.
and only the substrate should have the inoculant.
Otherwise you defeat the purpose of growing the sclerotia.

Okay I have a few questions, why is the purpose of growing sclerotia defeated if you are in fact growing them? (I'm speaking of your reference to Brainbreath's grow) I'm just trying to follow your logic, so please don't be offended by the question.

second, I'm interested in what you're talking about. Can you explain what I would use for substrate? What containers are you using? Kind of walk me through your lab, so-to-speak, show me around :-)

Thanks so much and have a great weekend!
JD

Well the purpose of separating soil from grain is for inducing the development of sclerotia. And the inoculation has to be
in the nutrient poor location.
You'll get a crusty powdery formation on grains but this isn't exactly
what they are talking about. I've got the "white lumps" they talk about on the farm.org/mushroompeople/morel.htm site and in the patents. So I know the extent it has to go to (and they are large lumps). And its not just surface growth; where there are white lumps its grows into the soil and through it.
Plus if you are trying to grow mushrooms from the colonized grain,
your mileage may vary cause somewhere I read sclerotia or the mushroom will not develope in the presence of nutrients. Which makes sense because they say you have to change the environment from a nutrient rich one to a nutrient poor one.
And then the other trigger "high amounts of water".
Brainbreath had soil and grain mixed together. Good luck sorting it.
Substrate should be 85% wood mulch bark pulp but wood, the other 15% potting soil and sand. You could go light on the potting soil in order to make sure it is nutrient poor.
Use hardwood mulch, this should be good and make it groundup mulch, but not down to a fine sawdust because this would restrict air flow. You'll want to add yeast nutrients, its all the urea you'd need for them and they mention it also in the 2nd and 3rd patents.
In addition to that add dextrose and mix this all up with water and
moisten your substrate. The sponges and along with the
grain tied up in oven bags and laid on top works great.
I'm using a mason jar, a cracked mason jar in a plastic 2 liter bottle with the top cut off about 3 to 4 inches down and the lid placed back on top, and a tray with drainage holes. I got a 96 quart tub w/ lid, which is for the tray which will sit in a suspended wire rack in the tub. I got 2 foggers, one with a floater, an aquarium water heater with temperature settings, an air pump for an aquarium...
I got the water heater since its getting cold outside and inside temperatures are in the mid 60s to lower 70s (rarely).
In the summer and I have succeeded and want to grow again I'll have to deal with the hot temperatures, probably need a Coleman's cooler with temp settings.

I believe that cultivation of morel will not come from sclerotia, but from liquid media.

The problem with ascocarps produced from sclerotia is that they are deformed and small because they are deprived of nutrients - in nature, the mycelium is spread over a large area and allowed to gather more nutrients. I think that the key is a liquid media.

Ascocarps have been cultivated from sclerotia since the 80's. They knew they could do this, the problem was the morphology of the ascocarp - deformed, and small.

I agree with you Cryogenicz, and in the same boat.  While working on sclerota formation I found enough literature to point to the fact that sclerota aren't necessary for fruit development and morels like to stretch out in the environment.  This is deep down one of the reasons I've been working on  LC fruiting of mushrooms  as several are discussing at that link.  Personally LC fruitings probably won't be beneficial for most species, but might open up more doors for morel production.

More likely I'm just a meddling nut on a wild goose chase, but at least I'm having fun

all this talk about morels...

was just wondering if anyone here's managed to start an outdoor fruiting morel bed? pictures? would be interesting to see if it's do-able, wouldn't mind getting a bed going when the winter's over, maybe.
