Observing your thoughts
    #6160270 -

I'm reading this book about meditation and it talks about being the observer of your thoughts.

When I think....my mind is at that thought...I can only observe the thought after I've had it.

Can any of you observe your thoughts while thinking?

Come to think of it...what is observing your thoughts? Just being aware of them? Can you have awarness without thought? If so...observing would just be another thought.

imagine if you had an angel following you around everywhere you went.
and you could hear the angels voice.
and the angel would talk to you and god, all the time.

from the moment you woke up you would hear things like,
angel:"TameMe is opening her eyes now. look she's so cute."
god:"she's got to take a piss now"
angel:"look it's so funny the faces she makes when she's peeing in the morning"
god:"yes, let's point her toward the coffee pot now"
angel: "TameMe wants the coffee, yum yum"

when you arrive at a higher level of consciousness-
this is exactly what you will hear going on inside your mind.
a voice that communicates to the universe, a voice that communicates to you in "third person" (your own mind calling you by your first name)
and your own voice which thinks it's own thoughts.

Observing your thoughts, is the same as observing what see through your eyes......It's simultaneous. Maybe by putting emphasis on "observing", means you actually pay more attention to them, which causes thoughts to be stored in your memory more clearly. So one can then build upon and learn from each thought rather that end up in a ball of confusion.

I'm not sure it is simultaneous....

you can see something and not observe it because your mind is elsewhere...like in a daze.

you can be thinking and not be aware that you are thinking.

observing your thoughts is basically being aware of them. then they will stop in order for the true divine self to be in control instead of ego.

when you observe your thoughts what are you thinking? some sexual fantasy, having power over other people, desire of some sort? the goal of meditation is to have control over these thoughts and erase the desire for unecessary things.

awareness without thought. yes, in fact its a super awareness.

can i observe my thoughts while thinking? yes it takes some practice but its well worth it.

if you are observing your thoughts then thats the true self, observing isnt a thought. if it is then observe it. the observer is the true self, thats the goal.

if this is confusing please tell me what to elaborate on.

it sounds kind of like a feeling....

you know you are aware or the observer because it is something felt?

what do you think this practice is going to do for you?
or for anyone?
observing the stream of your thoughts from the shoreline-
what do you think is the overall point of achieving that frame of mind?

to what end?

to what end?

to what end?

ask yourself to what end you're doing things.
then ask yourself to what end your thoughts are having their ways with.

instead of watching the stream of your thoughts in meditation.
i think it's better to just pay attention to your thought patterns constantly, and pay attention to what causes them to rise and fall.
if you're truly interested in yourself and your own brain it shouldn't be too hard to get in the habit.

to what end?
to what end?

do you have an end in sight that you want to arrive at?

teleplyus:
to what end? to death!!!
meditation isnt an end its the way of life.

paying constant attention to thought and being constantly the observer is advanced stuff.

"to what end" is the way of life
"to what end" is one of the most popular and powerful meditations i know of.
it's a manner of observing your thoughts.

sometimes people get involved with yoga or meditation for fun.
other times it's because of something deeper or more seriously important.
(like getting off drugs, or anger management or what have you)

take any action you do, or thought you have
and ask yourself to what end
and if you can't answer the question, it means you don't know what you're doing or why you're doing it, and you're basically just lost in chaos of non-meaning.

when you can answer the question "to what end" to what end to what end, then finally you don't need silly meditations because you actually have a grip on reality for once.
see how that works?
lol

i see it as taking your thoughts a step further, asking yourself why you think these things not just accepting them at face value. answering the question honestly would take quite an open mind, most people are in denial of themselves. when you hear someone say "i don't want to think about it," they say that because they fear the truth.

why am i desiring a cigarette? to what end?

to satisfy this incessant physical craving

to what end?

so i can relax a moment

to what end?

so i can have peace instead of distraction

to what end?

so that i might learn something rather than being so confused all the time

to what end

that i may be successful

to what end?

eventually you're going to get to the heart of why you think things
and why you do things

Just knowing WHY you do something is not the point of meditation.

to what end do you need to know why? what happens after you know? to what end then?

to what end.
interesting, ive never heard of it before or used it as a meditative technique. imo there are other much better techniques then 'to what end'. plus its not about the end its about the now, the end doesnt matter, theres only here and now.
