Help with an agar recipe.
    #613795 - 04/20/02 11:39 AM (21 years, 11 months ago)

I have:
2 lbs. dextrose
3 oz. food grade Agar-Agar
4 oz. nutritional yeast powder
6 oz. clover honey
1 box potato flakes
Various grain flours (millet, dark rye, brown rice)
Various grains (rolled rye, hulled millet, rolled oats)

But no light malt extract do to the lack of homebrew supply stores in my area. I was hoping that someone could give me a recipe utilizing the stuff I already have.
I really don?t want to mail order as I have no credit card, and I don?t have the time to wait the time it will take paying by money order.

I have seen a few PDA recipes using boiled potato water as a base but I would really like to premix the ingredients dry. So If at all possible I would like to somehow substitute whole potatoes with the potato flakes (instant mashed potatoes).

I have heard of people using dog food as a nutrient base for agar so I figure I could get a usable agar recipe with the stuff I got.

Any and all help is appreciated.

good quality dog food works well.
use 20 grams ground dog food, 20 grams agar, 1 liter water.

you can try also using the potato flakes, but have no idea about quantity

if you add a couple grams per liter of ground final substrate, i.e. rye this helps a lot in the leap off phase from the agar to the substrate.

Well I found this recipe at The spore works.

Potato Dextrose Yeast Agar (PDYA)

10 grams agar
10 gram dextrose
500 ml potato water* (water drained from boiled sliced potatoes)
1 gram nutritional yeast (optional)
* 5 grams of instant potato flakes in 500 ml water may be substituted.

looks good to me. I think ill try this one. should I have any problems using this recipe to germitate spores?

Thanks for your input CLuB99.
