agar recipes?
    #960068 - 10/14/02 05:17 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I went down to my local asian market, and was able to find some agar. Up until now i've been using pre-mixed agar, i'd like to mix my own. I've read the recipes, and was wondering what you guys have liked the most.

I'm deciding to buy light malt extract, make some PDYA, or possibly the dogfood agar, that are on the FAQ recipes.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I like PDYA the most, then dogfood agar, oatmeal agar and combinations of these with amarath for instance.
Still, PDYA is my favorite.

If you don't have a glovebox or a hepa blower I would recommend using this recipe. I have used it with great success and very few contams.

Here is a recipe that is easy and will grow faster than potato agar. You can find every thing you need at health food stores. I get mine from whole foods.
20 grams amarath flour.
20 grams soy flour (full fat)
9.5 grams agar.
500 ml bottled water.
pressure cook for 55min.
PH is almost always 6.5 if you use ozarka water..

I'm with Anno. I like PDYA. I use a brewer's yeast sold in powder form as a nutritional supplement.

easiest recipe is (taken from our website)

Recipe for Malt Extract Agar (1 liter)

20 grams Malt Extract
2 grams Yeast
15 grams Agar
Water

The dry ingredients are put in a flask and the water is added. This is sterilised for 30 minutes at 121 degrees Celsius.
The flask should be twice as large as the volume of the medium that is sterilised to prevent it from boiling over and should preferrably have a narrow opening. The opening is stuffed with polyfill, hydrophobic cotton or capped with Tyvek . This is covered with tinfoil.

Super simple agar

I've recently used the following simple agar formula with excellent results. Makes 5 thick agar plates. (thanks to Bluemeanie for this one):

* 1/3 teaspoon Ovaltine
* 1/2 teaspoon Agar
* 250ml water
* 1 tiny pinch of finely ground powder of your final substrate (eg brown rice flour, whole wheat flour, Dark Rye Flour, etc)

Boil water. Add Ovaltine, Agar and pinch of fine powder. Low boil for 10 minutes. Pressure cook at 15 PSi for 15 minutes.

The mycelium just loves that Ovaltine, with resulting thick, ropey growth. Milo sports drink works as well. I suspect Horlicks will also work, but i haven't tried it.

Adding a pinch of your final substrate to the agar makes the mycelium grow really quickly when you innculate. It conditions the mycelium for the final food.

I'd say its to dissolve all the ingredients together, and to melt the agar.
