Assisted Suicide
    #6132294 -

I have to write a persuasive essay for English composition and i decided to write it on assisted suicide. I think it should be legal for people who are terminally ill. Just wanted to see what some peoples views may be about assisted suicide.

I agree with your position; if you have a terminal illness, you should be allowed to end your life if that is what you desire. There are many diseases that people would just rather not live through. If the other option is suffering for months on end without any true relief followed by eventual death, I think I would pick a quick injection.

Man, we are sentient beings on this planet for such a short time! Our decisions are ours to make! Our lives are OUR lives - no one else owns you, you are you for the time that you are here...you should get to call the shots.

Most people who want to can. This was part of the movie Million Dollar Baby. I did not exactly agree with the dude killing her because she was not in horrible pain. If my mom went into a coma and she had nothing left to do, I would visit her alot and read her a book or something cool like that. It's better than killing her.

Good topic choice. I wrote a 12 page research paper for my senior project on Euthanasia. There's definitely a lot of points to make.

Being in coma is not a terminal illness. I think if a person had cancer that spread throughout their body leaving them in severe pain and them not being able to be treated is when assisted suicide should be an option because they know they are going to die in a matter of months anyway.

We are allowed to pick the fate of our sick pets why not be able to pick our own if we are just as sick?

I believe, its the Quality of life, not the quanity of life.
I know I wont suffer, for people to see me like that,
I can do myself. Doctors, and others who help people in
pain should not be punished.

Here in Holland euthanasia is legal under certain strict conditions. I simply cannot concieve how a civilized nation will deny terminally ill people the right to die in dignity.

Here in Holland there even was the proposition that people over the age of 75 could order a pill, which if taken brings about a merciful death:

Quote:
Drion's pill
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
.
Drion's pill is a fictitious suicide pill. It was proposed by Huib Drion, a former Dutch Supreme Court judge and professor of civil law. He argued that people aged 75 or over, living alone, should have the choice of being provided by a doctor with the means to end their lives at a time and in a manner that was acceptable to them. It would be distributed to those who might need it - naturally, with great wisdom and great care and under strict safeguards.
.
So far this has been only discussed as a theoretical proposition. No such pill exists in the Netherlands.

My mother died by euthanasia which I had to authorize :frown:

Euthanasia is harsh, but it is merciful in many cases, and to be preferred to letting a condition torture you to death. Because that is what often happens. A friend of my parents died because massive tumor growth in his lungs slowly asphyxiated him over the course of weeks. He chose to do this, but people should not be forced to suffer like that without any hope of recovery.

If he had blown his brain out, I'd be in peace with that decision. If he had asked me to "get his gun" (if he had one) I'd take it to the hospital for him and oversee that he did it right. In the USA, its incomprehensible how serial killers can get captial punishment, but good people are witheld from choosing a dignified death.

Sometimes the only cure for a disease is a merciful death, and that is why doctors should be able to administer it, on patient's orders, when the situation calls for it.

I'm all for it too, but only if the person has a terminal disease and faces months of pain and suffering.

I really believe it should be up to the person themselves to decide, if that is possible. No one can really tell how another person feels, and i know if i was in some freak accident and became a quadripalegic(sorry for the spelling), even though some people can live there lives with that, i could not. There would always be that deep down dissapointment of what I missed out on. A painful disabling disease would be the same.
But this also reminds me of a person on TV awhile back who was a vegetable, yet they kept them going. They had spentmost of their life in a hospital bed, practically unconcious. I dont belive these people should be kept like this. There are probably thousands of people around the world in the same situation. It seems very inhumane to me to have somone in this bad of a condition hooked up to wires and tubes and machines laying in a bed for their entire lives, with no hopes of ever having a life outside of this.
Now this isn't saying they should be just tossed into the woods somwhere to die. There are plenty of ways to "gently" kill somone. Thats just my opinion though, and i know MANY people disagree with that.

Thats one reason people who are battling with a deadly disease,
should get themselves a DNR: Do not resuscitate. Have a copy on file with your Doctor, also, a copy in your billfold, and one in your cars
glove box. And let your family and friends know your wishes.
