dextrose water for mycelium growth questions?
    #599089 -

I've been looking around the forums and saw that you can grow mycelium using dextrose water. My questions are, what ratio of water to dextrose are you supposed to use? Where can you get dextrose? And how long does it take until the mycelium will be able to use. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot

Dextrose solution. [Re: tenaciousC]

Dextrose, also known as corn sugar, is a wonderful alternative to honey for the purpose of producing liquid mycelial innoculant. The only problem is that some have difficulties in obtaining it. Those of us lucky enough to live within a reasonable distance from a Whole Foods or other large coop-type organic/health food store, as well as most any brewer's supply store, can usually locate it without much trouble.

The formula to use is 1.25tsp dextrose per 100mL water.

Usual sterility procedures apply: sterilize for 15 minutes at 15psi, or use the procedure outlined for sterilizing honey water in the microwave tek. Dextrose water remains clear following sterilization, as opposed to honey, which is (obviously) tinted yellow, and often - if not always - leaves behind a considerable amount of sediment. However, dextrose, too, will caramelize if heated for too long.

Despite having been extremely effective in the process of tissue cloning, it has not been at all successful in the germination of spores (that is, injecting spore water from a syringe into the dextrose solution). Experiment freely: you will likely incur different results.

Light dry malt gold & dextrose works fine. If you get sediment (?), filter & sterilize again. You must follow sterile procedures very carefully, or you get contam's.

Most local home brew beer supply houses have food grade dextrose powder (corn sugar) for 1 clam (& pennies) a pound.
