Germination vs Mycelium growth temperature?

The FAQ on this site states that, "mycelium has an ideal growth temperature at 86?F." The PF tek site states that, "If the temperature is kept around 70 degrees, germination will begin within 3 to 5 days." So ideally, should I initially keep my jars at 70?F then, once noticeable mycelium growth occurs, increase to 86?F?

I have kept my incubator at a range between 82-85 F. It fluctuates throughout the day depending if the A/C kicks on or not. Just remember the jars themselves will retain heat and add an extra 1-3 degrees of temperature. My guys all showed first growth on day 3. 7 are already at 100% and 3 more remaining at 95+% colonized.
Most strains according to SporeWorks' site should be incbuated at 82-84 degrees. It's workin for me. ![](/forums/images/icons/smile.gif)
Good luck.

Boppity, thanks for the reply. When you say that you saw growth on day three, how much growth are we talking? I ask because I have been keepin mine at about 84?F / 62%RH, and today is day three, but there's no growth that I can see.

My grow log is in the grow log forum "Mazatapec Grow Log" and all my info is there...I'd say the first signs of growth were between 1-3mm wide areas of white fuzz. These Mazatapecs have been very aggressive colonizers though. Depends on the strain. It could take your jars up to two weeks til you see signs of growth according to the literature and veterans here. Good luck and keep us posted!

This is my first time, so I went with Ecuador based on the advise of the Jedi masters! So now I'm off to read your growth logs. Thanks again!

Sure thing. We're here as a community to learn from one another. I hope your grow goes as well as mine has been going!

dont worry paranoid..even though by Day 3 and u see nothing. By week 1 u should see some spots about the diameter of 1/2" to 1" they really start to kick in by Week 3 to Week 4 where at least half should be covered. And using an incubator does wonders as oppose to finding a place in ur apartment that fits the ideal conditions. But the biggest pain in the ass for me is waiting for the bottom to finish out. Ive been waiting for like 10 dayz (since all the sides of my jarz have been covered) and the bottom hasnt moved much (yes i did flip dem and loosen the lids) Anything else i can do other than wait? If they dont finish up in another 4 dayz im jus gonna gut the unfinished bottom part up and go wit it!

sBUD, thanks for the feedback. Out of curiosity, why wouldn't you just leave the bottom of the cake attached, and put the whole cake in your terrarium?

Well, this is a good question, which i think many, perfectionist type 'knobs' are contemplating over.
Germination, of the spores, is dependant on the age of the spores and their relative 'dryness'. Also, don't forget, that the actual germination can be affected by the actual proportions of the substrate.
Cubensis mycelia grows best INBETWEEN these (70f -> 90f) temperatures. You must remember tho..... the word BEST.... meaning OPTIMAL, is quite relative to the person actualy growing.
Isn't your 1st time the best!
learn learn learn!
