ive heard both sides of the story, some light(diffused light,or florescent)is need for the mycelium to grow, ive also heard no light is best for mycelium to grow,so whats the general concenses on this matter.? ps. and for some reson i cant get on the chat site,is it down,it keeps saying error(connect failed, java net socket exception, connection reset by peer. i loaded the java straight from this site ,it should be good to go,thanks tripper

>>>ive heard both sides of the story, some light(diffused light,or florescent)is need for the mycelium to grow

WHERE DID YOU HEAR THIS???

think of nature. the mycelium is colonizing in complete darkness underground, right?

complete darkness is needed for mycelium growth. no other answer is correct. read pf tek and mmgg over again. you have misunderstood or misread you information.

gluck!

Darkness is best. But for invitro fruiting I hear it is best to expose them throughout colonization. Though I have found this not to be a good idea, being fruits sometimes mature before the cake is fully colonized. I used to love fruiting invitro just for kicks. It is very interesting. Sorry for going on about invitro fruiting, it dont even concern your question. Something to remeber

When do you suggest turning the lights on for in vitro fruiting? My cakes are 60%-90% colonized. I didn't want to turn the light on too soon to ensure that they're 100% colonized by the time the mushies near maturity. By the way I'm using PF classic and I've read a couple times that it's a good idea to begin fruiting them in the jars to maximize the first flush.

Well not that I am disagreeing with anybdoy, however XAZIA, I will quote directly from the PF Tek

"After inoculation of the jars, tighten the lid bands and retape the needle holes. Place the jars in a safe place out of direct sunlight. Indirect light is all that is required. If the temperature is kept around 70 degrees, germination will begin within 3 to 5 days."

for invitro pinning start exposing to light anytime after 50% colonization as a rough estimate.

indirect light is all that is needed for what?
as i stated to the poster, think in nature, is the mycelium exposed to indirect light? and when it is what transpires afterwards, pinning. hmmmm...so i ask again, indirect light is all that is needed for what? not for colonization, unless you like high electric bills, then go for it

Alright, I guess I'll start my 12/12 cycle this week then. I don't think the mycelium needs any light to grow because mine were in total darkness the first few days and grew fine. Since then the only light they have seen is when I check the jars for progress and contamination. I believe on the PF website it says that the trigger to begin fruiting (for the PF amazonian strain at least) is a food threshold and the vermiculite. Light will probably trigger more pins (there are already knots of mycelium even before I gave them much light) and tell the shrooms which direction to grow.

I fart blue(cool nic by the way ), that is what the PF tek states but light is not required for mycelium growth, incubation is actually best left in darkness. Not that fanaticus is inaccurate, but I have found darkness has its advantages. "Required" was exagerated by PF IMO.

When triggering pinning for invitro, I used to expose them to light a few days before full colonization occurs. This way, if fruiting occurs no uncolonized substrate is exposed at harvest time. I have a few pics of invitro fruiting I could show you if you are interested. And that is, if you dont mind me slightly altering your topic

Well thanks lol....Like I said I wasn't disagreeing with anyone, just pointing out the fact that the PF Tek does contain the part about indirect light. I completely agree with the conensus about incubating in the dark. Mycellium grows underground, where it is void of light. Replicating the growing conditions of nature is really is best for growth, so obviously we would want to keep incubating jars in the dark. For newbies like myself it can be confusing with conflicting info sometimes, but doing plenty of reading usually clears that up

Over the past few years, I have tried both methods of incubation (exposed or not to light.) The only difference I noticed is the likelihood of the jar incubated in the light to pin invitro. This may or may not be what you want.

Peace
