Perlite instead of vermiculite
    #592585 - 03/29/02 06:21 AM (22 years, 23 days ago)

I finally found something for cultivation...: perlite. But still can't find any vermiculite. Read somewhere that I could use one for the other, but I'm not quite sure of that. Does someone have experience with using perlite for the cakes?

No, you can't use perlite instead of vermiculite

I always wonder why its so hard to find these things... the gardening section of every major chain store in my area carries vermiculite and perlite in different sizes and grades. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I think Firestarter somehow lost a question mark in the URL

Another very good source that ships discretely:

http://www.discounthydro.com/growmediums.asp

If you want to compare prices, 1.0 gallon is about 0.156 cubic feet.  DH has the finer grade verm, which I believe in.

Hope this helps.

truth is you can subsitute perilite for verm in your recipes, and it works just as well, just make sure you dunk your cakes when they are birthed to restore the moisture becuase perilite tends to let the water evaporate faster out of your cakes. but it works fine. i know becuase i tryed it and have grown 8 cakes with perilite instead of verm half of them cased and half just birthed. another alternative if you dont have verm is to just use strait whole brown rice with no additive, this works better cased, becuase again it doesnt hold as much water as cakes with verm inside. to prevent the bottom of a jar of whole brown rice from becoming a yucky pond i put a very small layer of perilite at the bottom which helps alot. that method works well also. in summary: verm is best and not hard to get, but if you dont have it or dont want to get it, dont sweat you can get by with out it just fine.

Thank you,

I'll try to call the last few stores on Tuesday, and if none of them has verm, I'll try without it. Thank you Northwood for the information.

Thanks to all others. I knew about the internet myco-shops, but the cost of shipment from the USA to Europe made me think twice before buying if not necessary.

...Where cheese and chocolate melt in the mountain sun; where french-speaking dwarfs sing JEE...KNEE...VAH. I think their song celebrates the name of their calvinistic city. Funny dwarfs, aren't they?

By the way, It looks like you love Terence. Nobody got so close to my mind, either. But never tried "5 grams in silent darkness", only 3 with MAOis. I was alone in total darkness (nature), eyes closed. Unfortunately, I can't even remember a quarter of what I saw. I remember having cryied a few times, laughed, seen a lot of colors, came back with an interesting way of thinking, but mainly brought from conversations I had with my little flower. From then on, I decided to use a walkman-recoder (mic on headphones) and formalize my contacts with hallucinogenic plants (as McKenna wished; cf. *The Archaic Revival*), in order to "draw maps of the hyperspace". After the sixth hour, I still could barely speak (was that an effect of psylocibin or the few added ingredients: a small dose of Mimosa extract and a small-middle one of dryied Amanita?). Anyway, 5 grams or even ten are not enough to hear the *LOGOS* speak. The ear must be willing, ready, and probably trained. By the way, it must be noted that McKenna met the LOGOS, while Maria Sabina (the reknown shaman) talked and drank beer with some ancient president of Mexico and other statesmen. OUR speaking entities might well have different figures.

Well, a bit out of the conversation, sorry. It went so fast, I couldn't refrain.

Li'l Merlin.
