Exactly, The Self is defined as the culmination of all experience and form.

I wouldn't fear
For I've never known completeness
Like being here
Wrapped in the warmth of you
Loving every breath of you

well self is endlessly intermingled with universe, so chopping off af ew tendrils is not going to make that much difference

while it is a bit of a rash precedent with yummy bravado and shining delight, I can see a silver lining to it; so, well, I have said enough.

i haven't really been trying to accumulate or preserve at all....

i keep thinking about Lost Highway. I don't understand it because I only saw it once, but the man had a vendetta against video cameras and photos, because he wanted to remember in his own way.

I think mementos can be amazing things... I was moved to tears and really given a gentle smacking by myself when I watched some videos of me as a baby and realized just how absolutely much I was loved.... and how much of a labor of love life is.

on the other hand mementos shouldn't really be hoarded or even necessarily accumulated. The best mementos I have are in my brain, random recoveries of buried childhood experience, and it's much more clear and vivid than any video, even if you are only teased with nonsensible fragments.

somewhere in you everything you experienced is stored, and can be vividly recaptured if you free your mind enough.

it will reach a critical mass where you may not feel much difference between present and past..... i was just strolling for a walk and was linked up to the me that was riding in my uncle's car having just arrived at california a month earlier... and i was like "man well... that's a nice bridge of time i just accessed" it's pretty trippy.

but as for creating a wake... this is an enmorous strength of character you have developed and I applaud you for it. Freedom to me doesn't necessarily necessitate the abandonment of your materials, rather, severing attachment from them.

At some point in line, it may be best to chuck them all away though, because just having them around might still leave you a bit attached.

Life would ultimately be purest with little to no posessions, little to no escapism, and paradoxically I think that this resulting life would be so pure and simple that each moment would be far more "stimulating" and "pure" than any artifical moment created by devices of man's own invention.

the one thing we haven't invented with our technology is freedom.
well arguably you could use neurofeedback to train your mind to be free though. but nature did give us plants to do that in the first place....

....I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow, to feel inspired, to fathom the power, to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain, to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human......
Om Namah Shivaya, I tell you What!

Yes, you get it!  Simplify, increase focus on what matters, delve deeply into the moment.

I've already mined out the precious gems and minerals from my journals, as I have read through all of them every New Years' Eve for 24 years.  The patterns have been traced and re-traced, the dramas revealed as impermanent and ultimately unimportant, the loves exposed in their similarities, the dreams linked up with later action (or lack thereof), and the efforts matched up to later results (or lack thereof.).

I have no plans to become a wandering monk, owning only my robes and begging bowl.  The belongings I keep must be tools to facilitate my inner and outer activities.  If they don't pass this test, they will be passed on to someone else.  :sun:

I always find a place where I can stuff my things. Some seem unnecessary for others, but for me they keep remembrance. I also prefer usable tools, but some are 'usable' within ones mind.
If the place gets narrow, some less 'important' things will go away, so it is a constant rotating system here.
Perhaps every some years there is a bigger throw-away day with things I am sure won't use, look at or think about anymore
I don't call me sleeping

Yes, I will keep tools for both inner AND outer activities.

My aim is to seek out new experiences, rather than acquiring tangible "stuff."  This may include moving to another state or country, which is yet another reason for me to travel light.

I understand and it is good to do so.
But also good to know is where is one's home or where is one's temple...even that is not necessarily dependent on 'things' too.

Hehe, I don't consider my 'old' stuff very much. It gets dusty and will not turn my attention to it by itself. I don't clean it and it will rest quiet. But if I think I could 'use' it, it is there and I have not much to search for it.
If I put something on the shelf and it is full, the old stuff falls down almost unrecognized. A little recognition it will grant me, to consider if it really may go  Else I would be surprised what lies there behind my desk someday.
My brain surely works similar

I think Herman Hesse was referring to the 'self' as something similar to Freud's conception of the ego, the decision maker.

[edit: originally just a smiley, but I realize that could annoy some people...

I love / adore these threads... this one seems among the best... reading these posts is like warmth, intelligence, goodness, all of that... Love it - thanks! :sun:

Sunny day this morning, mostly, so far.

Also - if you meet someone whose favorite book is Steppenwolf, don't date them.... It's a phenomenal book in its way, but like many others it's pioneering.... I love Hesse to death (just a phrase, not literally), but. . . well, yeah.  Just some advice. Not that it's too likely...  they are pretty rare.
