Mind and body moving way too fast
    #5827920 -

This has been really bothering me for a long time now - my mind and body are just moving too fast for me. It's hard to explain. Kind of similar to being all amped up constantly and not being able to get rid of it.
It's to the point where I can't even relax anymore, at all.
I feel like I need to constantly be taking some kind of downer or drinking to get rid of this feeling.

I'm getting physical symptoms like a faster than normal heart rate and increased blood pressure. This can persist all day long.
Mental symptoms include a fast moving mind. My mind works overtime. I wish that I could just slow it down. I end up worrying about things that I can't even control, things I shouldn't even be thinking about.
My mind also jumps from thinking about one thing to another, very fast - in an ADHD style way.
I've always been very hyper my whole life and I used to be treated for ADHD.
This seems like it is very unhealthy - it certainly makes me feel miserable. I shouldn't have anything to worry about.
I'm still in my early 20s, so I don't think it has anything to do with getting old or whatever.

Of course I have trouble sleeping as a result of all of this also - I'm not worried about sleep right now though.

I was wondering if anyone understands, can relate to the problem, or give some kind of advice.

I relate to the mind problem. Been happening for years. I self medicated with cannabis, but that stopped working after a year or so. Doctor gave me trial ambien to sleep...that stopped working.

I don't know any way to stop this other than breathe in and out deeply, and focus on it...but that doesn't always work either. I think it's a serious problem with very little/no way to fix it. I am going to look into yoga and meditation though.

I also self-medicated with cannabis, but it also stopped working after 2 years or so. I stopped 2 months ago. Meditation helps a lot. I meditate almost everyday, using the TM technique. Works great. I still have problems, but they are more related to physical health problems, like allergies, which I'm seeing someone for.

It kind of feels like I'm tweaked out on some kind of hard stimulant 24/7 - like I just ate a whole bottle of ephedrine or something. Maybe it is some kind of chemical imbalance.

Pretty crazy that I can't focus on one thing for very long. If I ever tried to meditate or something like that, it would be totally impossible. There's no way that I can sit still without my mind racing on and worrying about anything and everything.

Maybe laying off of caffeine, sugar, or anything else that might contribute to it would be best. I might end up seeing a doctor and talking about medication.

These days if I do smoke weed anymore, it will intensify the problem. It would give me mad anxiety and make my heart beat so fast that it feels like it is going to explode.

Weed did used to calm me, not anymore though.

I no longer ingest caffeine except on the very rare occasion I drink a carbonated beverage.  I don't eat much chocolate, but what little I do, I make sure there is no caffeine in it.  Sugar isn't bad, but refined sugars are.  Avoid HFCS and other types.  I'm unsure of the effects of preservatives, such as BHT, but I've tried to stop eating food that contains that.  I have a very healthy diet.  Fruits and vegetables everyday, plus loads of grains.  Protein coming from vegetables and peanut butter (natural, even though it's not completely natural).

My problem still persists.

I'm not personally a fan of doctors.  I haven't been ill in over three years, except for one sinus infection which was coming from a moldy water bong...yuck!  But I rode it out, and it went away in due time.  Most of the time they want money as opposed to your well-being.  But do as you feel is best.

You ARE balances and imbalances. So yes it is an imbalance, but that doesn't mean you are not in control. That imbalance is you, you don't need to have a doctor medicate it, that will just suppress it. Laying off caffeine and sugar is vital, you should not be eating those things ever.

"If I ever tried to meditate or something like that, it would be totally impossible." No way! You just don't understand what meditation is. Meditation will make a big difference for you. It's not about obtaining something, or some kind of state. You don't have to DO anything. There is no where you are trying to get to. The point is to slow yourself down. Trust me, I know how hard that can be. But the more you try the easier it gets. Just sit there with you eyes closed. Don't get up even if you really want to, don't open your eyes, just chill. Scratch your itches, have your crazy thoughts, just be ok with yourself, and when you remember, breath. It's really simple and really easy. The hardest part is bringing yourself to doing it in the first place. Once you're sitting with eyes closed in a quiet place you are halfway there.

Edit: "There's no way that I can sit still without my mind racing on and worrying about anything and everything." It's ok for your mind to do that. That is part of meditation. You need to allow that kind of thinking, just be with it. The more you let it out the more it will release. Meditation is all about being with your stress, and allowing it to dissipate. You cannot force it away, meditation is not about intention or focus or strain, it's about just being. Those racing thoughts should be embraced and soothed, not suppressed and controlled.

Same problem here...had it for years :/ I'm in my early 20s as well. Caffeine REALLY magnifies the anxiety. I drank coffee a lot last week after not touching caffeine for a loooong time and it definetly fucked with me...1 and a half cups kept me speeding for over 12 hours.

I've found the only thing that helps are opiates, benzos, and alcohol. Too bad none of them seem realistic to use to help the condition, and the after effects of each seem to make the problem increase greatly... :frown:

I've had general anxiety all of my life, but the irrational side of my anxiety has became worse over the years. I wish I could help, but all I can do is say that you're not alone

i'm pretty sure everyone that meditates starts out this way. and nothing about meditating is 'impossible'. basically all you do is sit still for awhile.
once you learn how to do this, you could find every symptom you listed earlier disappear whenever you want them to. simply by sitting around.

i would get your thyroid checked bigtime - that sounds very familiar. If your thyroid is hyperactive you will feel exactly as you described.
Several other conditions can also result in higher basal metabolism, such as adrenal overactivity and some dysautonomias.
I know what its like from my own experiences. Its like being wired and tired at the same time...

Enjoy the article:

From Vision and Spirit, an Essay on Plato's Warrior Class, by local
philosopher, professor and all around smart guy, Joe Simmons:

For Plato, ascent towards spiritual vision and fulfillment begins with
our organic nature. The philosopher and mystic visionary begins as an
athlete. The organic nature is disciplined as a means of disciplining
one's soul. In the Republic Socrates perpetuates the Greek concept of a
sound mind in a sound body through athletic training. (Plato himself was
a competitive wrestler in the Greek Olympic Games. "Platon" is a
nickname meaning "broad shouldered, well muscled, and large.")

For Plato, exercise and sport is ascetica. It develops "askesis," the
ability to discipline oneself in preparation for action. In Sparta
vertical jumps were used for conditioning. Many Spartan women could do
these vertical jumps by the hundreds. Again, the exercises of Plato
would be of like nature to these Indian and Spartan gymnastic movements.
Plato based the beginning steps of spiritual mastery on these types of
gymnastic dancing. Though we do no know all the specifics of his
athletic training programs, we do know from the Republic the great
importance Plato attaches to these athletic exercises. Why, we may ask,
does Plato treat this Greek "yoga" with such reverence? Plato's teacher
Socrates had drawn from Greek culture his notion of sport. For classical
Greek there was an intrinsic connection between sport and character.
(Gymnastic for Plato meant exercise in general though he refers to some
specific movements throughout his writings).

It is at this point that Plato gives an interesting twist on his concept
of reciprocity between ritual exercise and self-development. In the
Republic, Socrates says that "the excellence of a good body doesn't make
the soul good". It is the other way around. It is the "excellence of a
good soul" which "makes the body as good as it can." He had already
insisted that "after poetry the young must be trained in gymnastics."
The youth must be an athlete, "carefully trained all through life from
childhood up." If this "gymnastic," or physical training in general does
not affect the soul (the spiritual and philosophical powers), why
Plato's insistence on exercise? The answer. I believe, lies in line
404b. Here Socrates that the military athletics need an athletic program
which is ` a sister" to "simple poetry." In other words, Plato's warrior
class doesn't use physical training for bodily development, but for the
development of the warrior/guardian's soul. Physical excellence is a
by-product.

Listen to what tallgreen has to say. Meditation makes a difference and it's good. A fast moving mind and body is a by-product of your emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical needs. It is not some symptom of ADD or bla bla. It's what you need to accept and understand. Take it from someone who was down for a long time - it makes a difference to try. It has to be your state of mind, every day, all the time, to do your best. That can mean simply understanding that you are too excited and need to calm down. The main reason for this is because you want to be relaxed enough to think or do the thing that will lead you on the right track. If you start to exercise and meditate, you will not suddenly become a whole different person. The difference is that, when it counts, you will be able to do what you need to do because of the strength that you build up. It's the difference between realizing your moment of truth and letting it pass you by because you couldn't pull through. And that 1 thing is all you need sometimes. It will make all the difference in your happiness.

So please, for your own sake, realize that this is the time to do what it is that you need to. Make the decision right now to walk in the right direction and acheive what you need to. If you were a kid playing with your friends, what would you do? If you had no idea about yesterday or tomorrow or 5 minutes from now, what would you do? Maybe you don't even know. Try taking a shower and thinking about things. Maybe try sitting down and writing until something meaningful happens. Maybe try going on a long walk. Just stop getting down and being confused. Question, but never forget that you are looking for the answer.
