Weight-lifting and gymnastics.
    #8512737 -

I'm an avid lifter, but have become interested in gymnastics again and again. I've read a lot about it and it seems like something I would want to do exclusively for awhile.

Now, I still really enjoy lifting but sometimes it feels like gymnastics has more to offer or at least a combination of the two would be better. I find it hard to explain, but from what I read gymnastics seem like it would teach you to move better, or be able to be more active in everyday life, you know? Lifting seems somewhat gym, and strength exclusive whereas gymnastics can be applied to all kinds of fun things in life. Am I right, or wrong?

A quick example of what I'm thinking would be: A lifter can do really good in the gym, but still move like a clunky robot outside whereas a gymnast would be learning both his skill and how to move freely outside.... still hard to explain. Though another thing I find cool is that bodyweight exercises along with many gymnast movements can be performed almost anywhere, whereas most of us lifters need that 45lb Olympic Standard barbell, bench press, and squat rack.

Anyway does anyone have any experience with gymnastics they could share? Here are a couple of neat sites I found if anyone is interested:

Gymnastics rocks. It builds lots of core strength and flexibility. Be careful of your joints though. I have friends who were great gymnasts but like aging football players they have lots of joint problems later in life.

Same for some Martial Artists.

Gymnastics does build a consistently strong body.

I've always admired guys who can do this:

I am pretty intense when it comes to being fit. I will tell you what I do to avoid becoming an unflexible meathead. First.... Stretch! Long stretched muscles are healthy muscles. Stretching will help you become less of a clunky robot. Second... On your off days you should run. What I do is run and every 5-10 min I get down to do 20 pushups then get back up and run. Pushups make your arms and chest strong as hell and they dont make you clunky. Also try swimming and Yoga like exercises that work strength and stretching.

maybe that helps
