Using aluminum foil instead of canning jar lids?
    #3719314 -

Greets,
After growing several times with good results each time it has become that time of year again and I have noticed that my canning jar lids, etc. are becoming a little rusty. What I was wondering was has anyone had sucessful results by simply using aluminum foil & rubber bands during the sterlization/inoculation/incubation processes.

Also during incubation should the inoculation holes be sealed?

Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated.

In theory this aluminium foil should work just the same. Anyone wanna sacrifice a jar.

I guess my primary concern was contaminants. I've heard that tinfoil during the incubation stages can lead to contaminants MUCH faster than with regular lids.

What about Tyvek material during incubation?

i successfully used the tinfoil method on rye jars for about a year,
moving to a new place made it impossible - i now have to use air filters.

i use polyfill filters.

With PK-TEK BRF foil works great. When you start to move up into different substrates, they might need to "breathe" more than others. The life growing inside produces a lotta gas while it breaks down the substrate. The three layers of foil, and the dry verm layer on top should be perfect if your doing 1/2-1pt jars.

I tried using the PF Tek with regular glasses and alluminum with no luck. The moisture infiltrated the substrate and threw off the water content. It ended up being way too wet. If I had to try that method again, I would definitely use a rubberband and just do one glass to test it out.

Just how much water did you use in the pressure cooker?

if using grain jars it might make it difficult to shake... possibly ripping the alum foil off the top of the jar.
