Indoor Cactus Garden

I've been thinking about this now for a while, actually...
I have a 10-gallon glass fish tank. I have not been replacing the fish as they have died off from old age. My intent is to let the last of them die off, and then find a new use for the tank.
The preferred use would be as an indoor cactus garden, for small cactus species.
I would replace the flourescent lamp on the top with HPS lighting, put down a layer of soil in the bottom, and introduce some small cacti. Then I could just put it on a timer and have a nice, pretty desert scene contained within a tank in my bedroom (although perhaps moving it to a different room would be better).
Has anyone tried anything like this? I'd appreciate any tips or feedback about this. I may never do it, but if the opportunity arises when I have the time and money, I will most likely go through with it.

i have carnivorous plants that i keep in an aquarium, mostly for humidity.
so i dont think cacti are a good choice for aquariums cuz Rh will skyrocket everytime u water. i dunno, but it might be a problem.
drainage would be another big problem as well as the stuff u need to do like repotting etc, would be a bitch to do like that.
thats why all carni growers keep their plants in pots in the aquarium.
aquariums are perfect for cutings and stuff like that. and ofcourse mushrooms...

Well, the aquarium has an open-top... humidity could be somewhat localized inside, but there's plenty of ventilation to keep things from getting overly muggy, I'd think.
Watering might be tricky, I'd have to make sure I used very small amounts of water, right at the base of the cacti where it's needed.
Drainage just wouldn't exist. I'd have to rely on evaporation to keep the soil dry.
Hrm, tricky...

I'll be honest, I hate keeping fish. They eat and shit, and nothing else.
At least with cactus there would be less maintenance
