"that old fart is one hell of a hippy"
He was never a hippy. He is an elitist who feels that LSD should not be available to common people...that it should be the domain of researchers only. He noted that it's legal status was valid. I read this in a recent interview with him. Earlier in his life his view was more liberal. It seems even LSD cannot truly open a mind that wants to be closed. JUst because he discovered it by accident gives him no special viewpoint that is more valid than others...he is a chemist, not a psychiatrist. Leary was the psychiatrist.

I did a bit of research on his views:
"He calls LSD "medicine for the soul" and is frustrated by the worldwide prohibition that has pushed it underground. "It was used very successfully for 10 years in psychoanalysis," he said, adding that the drug was hijacked by the youth movement of the 1960s and then unfairly demonized by the establishment that the movement opposed. He concedes LSD can be dangerous in the wrong hands. [1]"
From Wikipedia
At a symposium in January 2006 to commemorate his 100th birthday, he did say though that LSD is probably not in the scheme of human evolution (but how does this reconcile the natural existence of psilocybin, peyote etc?)

I beg to differ. Dr. Hofmann is Swiss, and reserved. I have posted letters between him and me here. He believes that "the LSD inebriation" reveals "the most comforting truth of the Gospels." LSD has figured prominently into his spiritual life, and I believe that he is both awed and humble at the magnitude of his discovery on the spiritual lives of so many people.

I bet he never really retired. If a person has a dream, or feels they are needed in this world they tend to live longer.

I wish I wasn't a (poor) student so I could have been able to afford to go to the LSD Symposium last January in Switzerland.
Oh, and Dr. Hoffman was anything but a fucking hippy dude, I don't know what you are talking about. One, just because you take psychedelics in more than moderate doses does not make you a hippy. I've taken quite a round of trips to the dome, and I'm anything but. A hippy is a weak, indolent, habitually lazy child, a psychonaut is a whole different ordeal.
Two, hippies don't invent (even by accident) mind morphing chemicals, scientists do.
I also agree on keeping LSD to the few who can handle it. Reasons being that only a few can handle it, and if it was kept on low profile, we wouldnt have had idiots jumping out of buildings and ruining it for the rest of us. Plus, if you could get medicinal prescribed LSD, that would also mean a much more potent and cleaner 'cid going around.
And Leary being the psychologist? C'mon...
I like some of Leary's stuff, like "How to Program Your Brain", but if he wouldn't have lived and propogated the shit, it now wouldn't be a Schedule I narcotic.
Although I don't really care much for acid, I only play with my tryptamines (psiloc[yb]in, Dimethyltryptamine), and mescalito.

Like it or not Leary was a psychiatrist. He taught psychiatry at Harvard. I think that qualifies as "psychiatrist". If LSD was only for the elite this forum would not exist. Who determines "who can handle it" a government appointed shrink? There are many problems with being an elitist or a snob. Freedom means freedom for all...not the few.

Instead of giving a long retort on Leary, psychiatry and elitism of psychedelics, care to take a look at my long paper on psilocybin mushrooms?
www.rivend.com/shroom/MagicMushrooms3.doc
It gives an intricate and detailed explanation on what I think should be done with psychedelics in general...LSD included, if you wish.
Check it out, see where I'm coming from, and let me know your response. However my replies will be sparse the next week, I'll be working 11 hours daily, so a message board will not be the first thing on my mind when I get home. Sorry, Hue

Wow, you corresponded with him on the topic of Christianity? That's pretty neat. What else did he say on it and was he a Gnostic himself? I don't know that much about him, admittedly, other than the official account I read when he first intentionally dosed it.
I think he has some points though about it's current legal status and the way it was put up on a pedestal by the 60's counter culture. There was alot of materialization of acid it seems. It was viewed as a doorway instead of merely a key. Even major league pitchers were taking it during games back then

Yes, and their wouldn't have been a great amount of social and cultural change, and you would not be here on this website here today.
 Peace.

Depends.
We've got people here in Croatia living over 100 here and there, and most of them live in backwater willages living a primitive farmers life. Specially in the maditeranean region, where the air is good and people eat healthy food, and spend all day hearding sheeps.
But in cities you rarely find such people, the stress kills. Also, over here, living over 100 was far more common say 50-60 years ago than today.

Avarage maybe. The sick used to screw the avarage in the past. But now the sick live almost as long as the healthy ones, and the healthy ones live shorter than they used to. But still the avarage is better today.

I honestly didn't mean anything by it when I called him a hippy. If you catch the mood in my OP, you'll see that I was just trying to keep a light/playful feel to this thread. But it seems like it's not going to stay that way.
