Who determines "who can handle it" a government appointed shrink? There are many problems with being an elitist or a snob. Freedom means freedom for all...not the few.
Actually, Tim Leary was a research psychologist - a Ph.D. not an M.D. (psychiatrist). He actually made a major contribution to psychological testing in the 1950s. He was obnoxious at Harvard reunion parties, according to a former professor at U. of Maryland (Laura Dittman) whose husband was a contemporary of Tim Leary.
I met Leary twice, and got I him to sign a [fine] hardback copy of The Psychedelic Experience - twice - almost 20 years apart. (Let the bidding commence ). I tried to offer him a baggy of shrooms the second time, but he didn't know me and registered immediate paranoia so I re-pocketed the baggy. That was in '94 I believe.

I stand corrected. I was stating information from memory, and it had been a while since reading about him. My point is still valid...the man WAS a Doctor....PHD variety...he was qualified to treat people for mental disorders. If he was a psychologist how did he get access to drugs? I thought only psychiatrists did that.

LSD was an experimental 'substance.' I lived right near Sandoz Pharmaceuticals where Leary bought his. I'd made deliveries there all the time and the guards always told this long haired delivery guy "Have a nice trip!" It wasn't made illegal til 1966, so it could be purchased by psychologists from Harvard.

I would have picked up an extra "delivery" for myself if possible. I like the attitude of the guards...if only it was the prevailing attitude today...

dr hofmann does take a daily dose of hydergine (ergoline mesylates?), which seems to help protect the brain from O2 deprivation & possibly from those troublesome "mini-strokes"...
~
ya, tim was clinical psycholgist, w/kaiser group... his personality profiling system was quite innovative for the late 50s... in dr humphrey osmond's book _understanding understanding_ he states that tim leary's personality type was sufficiently novelty-seeking (& iconoclastic?) that he should not have done psychedelics more than once (if at all!) (& dr osmond & his collaborator dr abram hoffer were MDs who worked in a saskatchewan mental hospital, treating alcoholics with LSD (including bill w, founder of AA), turning aldous huxley onto mescalne, & they already had a psychedelic study group going on at harvard when tim ummmm sorta dropped in to the psychology dept, hehheh... (they were alittle worried, cuz tim seemed a little "square" to them at first...
