It turns pink and then clear when it's saturated. Bake it at 400 degrees for an hour and it's indigo blue again and ready to re-use.

What is the colour changing agent used in Binks? Cobalt Chloride?

Some of them are really nasty, heavy metals

I believe it's likely cobalt chloride. In any case, I always physically segregate the stuff from my consumables. They never touch.

All chemicals (well, most) will degrade with heat, light, moisture and exposure to air.
The colder you store it at the slower its' molecules move, the longer it retains its' natural consistency/potency.
