crumbling without casing????

sorry for all the questions as of late, but my friend's cousin's uncle has been thinking of new stuff to try and he doesnt want to try things that y'all know wont work.
SO, does anyone know if crumbling cakes and putting them in a basic perlite grow chamber without casings would work or produce any better effects than just laying the cakes in there whole? the basic cakes on perlite does work well, but we were thinking that if you crumbled them, there would be more exposed growth area for the mycelium/pins/shrooms as compared to a whole cake. we could be wrong though....
any help is much appreciated.

Look up the flat cake tek...

Its basically crumbling them up, then laying them in a larger bowl, and then haveing them re-colonize, and then dumped back out in a huge cake form. Id think that its just sorta a waste of time, and you'd probably just wanna go w/ casings
