air exchange
    #5481592 -

Hey folks, I recently started my first grow (updating the thread soon with pics), the jars have been in the incubator for 3 days now and im pleased with the progress, especially my brazilians.

I have a question for some of you vets. At what point is it alright to remove the tape from my holes to allow air exchange? I'm not too confident in my dry verm layer at the top, it exists, I can shake the jars and hear it, but looks like it was damaged slightly while pressure cooking. I've heard someone say the allow air exchange when mycelium reaches the size of a quarter but I want some more opinions.

I dont tape at all. I don't get any more contams and it takes a few days off colonization.

You want to leave the tape off inoculation if you used tape in the first place. Also for reference:

Gas exchange: The ability to release builtup gases resulting from the myc's metabolic activity (consuming substrate). A result of this inability to release these gas creates EXCESS myc piss which BTW is a normal process (myc piss) but an excess is not, it can easily stall a cake. (do not lick your cakes or leave your holes taped) Simply put it's an exchange in values.

FAE (fresh air exchange): Is the lowering of the co2 concentration through the introduction of fresh air plain and simple. A good fresh air exchange includes the stagnated moisture pockets of the casing surface (microclimate).

Micropore is a common one, I myself have never heard of sporetape?

Brands would be 3M or Johnson & Johnson... I picked up a roll tonight for about a buck, there was the paper kind and a cloth kind, I opted for the cloth kind because its waterproof. Its for taping on large bandages to allow your skin to breathe, and that's where you'll find it - right next to the band aids and probably next to the H2O2... micropore is a fancy name, its basically just medical tape.
