Jars and air exchange
    #5969143 - 08/16/06 11:02 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I know mycelium 'breathes' oxygen as it grows.

I have however seen a few teks that imply air-tight is the best way to prepare jars. Is this the case?

How much faster would the growth be at this point with more air exchange?

yep mycelium needs o2. its better IMO to have a jar with a small hole with a piece of tyvek/polyfill/micropore tape over it. it makes sure that there is enough gas exchange.

with a sealed container growth could stall

SPAWN is what you have in your jars

and YES they need air exchange

Search otto's posts... he did an experiment with jars that have no air exchange and with air exchange
no air exchange performed very poorly

teks that imply air-tight jars are wrong, period.

air-tight is a good way to stall growth, and to provide an anerobic environment that bacteria and other contaminates thrive in.

for clarity, what you want in a jar is GAS exchange, not AIR exchange. there's a subtle difference. gas exchange means that its not air tight so that gases can permeate. air exchange, means you're exchanging all of the air. this isn't what you do with jars.

mycelium needs to "breathe" during colonization, but it also benefits from a higher concentration of CO2. so there's two problems with excessive gas exchange, one being that you don't allow enough CO2 buildup, the other being that moisture can escape and dry out the substrate. so "more" gas exchange isn't necessarily better... its a balance you need to strike for "just enough" gas exchange... but zero gas exchange, is a sure way to fail.

to tell you how exactly to prepare your jar, we'd need to know what you're putting in it. obviously grain jars are done a little differently than PF jars. in both cases, you have a very small opening (or openenings) that are protected by filter material - in the case of PF jars, its your verm layer. in the case of grain jars, its polyfill, tyvek, micropore, or some combination thereof depending on how you design your lids.

I just crack the lids a bit and leave the foil on, works perfect!!!! No moisture loss and plenty of gas exchange to boot!!!

Not too loose a half turn is plenty or you can simply leave your inoculation holes uncovered but I find cracking the lids help even more.

I can only assume you're talking about pf jars with a vermiculite barrier. Don't leave grain jars unfiltered.
