jar air exchange
    #1285069 - 02/06/03 10:43 AM (21 years, 9 months ago)

A little over three weeks ago I injected 20 half pint jars with amazonian, and as of today most of them are about half colonized. Slow. I have a pretty stable 80-90 degrees maintained in my terrerium, with about 70 % humidity, so environment shouldnt be the problem. So as a last resort, im wondering if the tape over the lid holes is a problem. Do jars really need air exchange? ive gotten mixed messages on this. I always figured not, because it would up the risk of contaminants getting in.

Take the tape off and put a coffee filter over the top with a rubberband.

Anno experimented with this idea and found that some does help a bit. Personally, I've experienced no problems with no air exchange during incubation, along with many others.

During fruiting, of course, but I believe we're talking about incubation.

i suppose its hard for you to know all the meanings of english words, but in english gas exchange and air exchange are both okay to say.i guess if you really wanted to get into it , there is air, and the air contains many different gasses , all of the gasses make up the air. so stop bitchin about dumb shit.

anarchist, you started off really nice then got rude at the end. So what, English is not his first language. Try to keep that in mind. I think fugu is alright, even though his posts do require a bit of "deciphering" from time to time. I always try to remember that if roles were reversed and I was posting on a board where another language was being used that I would not appreciate being the subject of other's ridiucule simply because I had not mastered their language yet. There is a difference between ignorance and stupidity. The former is acceptable and able to be corrected through education; the latter is unacceptable and is an unfortunate reality which generally is irreversible. Ignorance of our language is just that: ignorance... NOT stupidity. His posts may be hard to read but he is obviously intelligent and I for one welcome his contributions to this community.

Funny thing their guy, I know a three fisted monkey that has the same sort of configuration (that being amazonian in half pints stalling), well anyway i finaly got the monkey to pull his third first out of eheemmmm... and anyway long story short he removed the tape and loosened the lids and colonization speed up promptly, In the monkeys situation air exchange has always been important, maybe because the incubator is in a sealed contain within several containers i dont know anyway it is important do it up youll be happy

Air is a mixture of different gases: nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide and other gases. Air is what you breath.

Air is a mixture of different gases: nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide and other gases. Air is what you breath.

air is what you breathe and oxygen is what you ABSORB/CONVERT. mycelium/mushrooms do not breathe so to speak as they do not have lungs. but they do ABSORB/CONVERT oxygen pretty much the same way we do. gas exchange is actually more of an accurate term as opposed to air exchange. air is still air even when the ratio of oxygen to carbon dioxide is altered. you are exchanging air that has a higher concentration of the gas OXYGEN with the air that has a higher concentration of the gas CARBON DIOXIDE. so, in effect, it IS a gas exchange.

edit: really, it doesn't matter as the air(s) are being exchanged. a TRUE gas exchange would involve using a pure gas  (o2) to exchange the converted o2 (co2). who really cares, I'm pissed I even bothered to type that shit up

On my friends first round of jars, (pf tek) he had a dry verm layer on the top but only some of them had holes open for air/gas exchange. The ones that were open colonized fully in 24 days, the ones that didn't have holes open until 14 days into it, colonized in 45 days, almost double the amount of time.

My two cents

Can someone please explain to me if gas/air exchange is so important, how come hippie can get 7+ grams per cake invitro??? There is very little exchange when they are left in the jar for 4 or more good flushes. Please explain how a shroom can grow in a jar smashed against the side with absolutley no room for the fruit itself, let alone decent gas/air exchange?

it's more about preventing anaerobic bacteria and aborts. inside a a jar it should stay sterile.
