gas exchange in a perlite terranium
    #5302526 -

I remember reading somewhere of someone using an air pump that had 2 rods that went in at the bottom of the terranium that pumped air in and out. You then filled put the perlite right over these 2 rods. I just cant find where I read this and saw the pictures. If someone could help me out on what this item is called, I want to try to pick myself up one today. Thanks guys.

I think you are referring to the "Poor Man's Pod", or PMP. --->HERE<---

The rods are called bubblewands, and they can be picked up at pet stores which carry fish, or Wal-**** in the aquarium section.

Ahh yep thats were I saw it. Has anyone used these before? Was wondering how well these bubblewands work in getting sufficient gas exchange through. And whats the point of the geolite instead of the perlite in this situation?

I see that the profile air pump seems to be a pretty common air pump. Ive ready some reviews that it is pretty damn loud though. Is the profile a good bet to go with or you guys have any alternate suggestions?

it's not loud. It has worked like a charm. Any is fine so long as it is strong enough.

First of all your talking fresh air exchange not gas exchange they are two different animals here.

Gas exchange: The ability to release builtup gases resulting from the myc's metabolic activity (consuming substrate). A result of this inability to release these gas creates EXCESS myc piss which BTW is a normal process (myc piss) but an excess is not, it can easily stall a cake. Gas exchange is simply an exchange in values nothing more. (do not lick your cakes or leave your holes taped)

FAE (fresh air exchange): is the lowering of the co2 concentration through the introduction of fresh air plain and simple. A good fresh air exchange includes the stagnated moisture pockets of the casing surface (microclimate).
I hope this helps you understand a bit more about the process. GL

many people use holes stuffed with polyfill (pillow stuffing) or tyvek to enable better gas exchange

if you're using a simple perlite terrarium...
then "the path of least resistance" might be the best way to go.
fan, fan, fan.
it's easy.
unless, of course you don't have the chance to spend a minute several times a day to fan your terrarium out...
then i'd agree w/ most of what's said above.

another thing to think about, though, is that when you open up to fan your tub/terrarium out - if you dont have a drip-guard - you can wipe excess moisture off the lid so it doesn't drip onto your cakes/shrooms

I believe the purpose of stuffing the holes is just to keep the terranium still sealed off, from contams and such, while acting as an exhaust for the fresh air exchange. (credit hyphae there on the new found knowledge, thanks man for the clarification).

What is the purpose of using a drip shield. I thought I read somewhere else that in addition to fanning them a couple of times a day you should mist PF cakes to keep them hydrated.

The purpose of a drip shield is to prevent condensation that accumulates on the lid of your terrarium from raining onto your cakes.

This water is harmful to pins and can cause aborts.

You want to keep your cakes hydrated by dunking between flushes, not misting. Try dunking and rolling in vermiculite. This will increase the yield of your cake.

so DO mist the cakes? or do NOT mist them directly?

This thread died two years ago.  You have to gently mist cakes or any other substrate for that matter, or they'll dry out.  Don't listen to any advice saying otherwise.  There's lots of bad information in old threads, especially from a few years ago.

Yeah wouldn't leaving them to dry end up making them have like a sealed layer almost?  Basically screwing up any pinsets that might be formed?
