How important is gas exchange?
    #3455447 - 12/06/04 05:42 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I've three questions-

Everyone mentions faning to help initiate pinning. But these things can pin whilst inside of jars, with very little gas exchange? So whats the deal? Does it help it pin faster? I ask this because I've got a very small air pump in my PMP(perlite). Its been near 3 weeks with no sight of pins. So I'm looking at my setup with a more critical eye now. The only things thats not gauged is the gas exchange. Temp is approx 73, humidity is approx 95%. 12 hours of natural light. Upgrading the pump is my next step...will this really matter?

Second question? Can cakes die before yielding anything? They were birthed a couple days after being fully colonized. If they are doing thier magic, albeit slowly, cool. If they've up and died...time to start over. If they really can't die, aside from being conquered by contams, then they should make something eventually. Right?

Hypothetically - what if the inside of the cake is contaminated. Will this slow down the pinning process? From what I understand it should cause deformed mushrooms, could it affect flush quatities, growth time, etc?

Any info or point in some direction is much appreciated.
Thank You.

if the center is contamed you would see it on the outside in no time. Just be patient--some people wait 20 days+- for pins.....try a cold shock for 12 hours....
