Dreams V.S. Reality and foolish choices, any help apreciated

Okay, heres the deal.
I want to buy an old delivery truck (fedex/ups style) and convert it to run on vegitable oil.
i found a truck with 175,000 miles for 2 grand.
i can get a conversion kit to run the thing on vegitable oil for another grand.

Then i will take it to the DMV and have the title legally converted to an RV, so that i can live in it and take it across the country.

thing is i want to take it with me to miami this weekend, and thats a 3000 mile trip, which i wont have the kit for, although i will be able to mix half vegitible oil with half diesel in my one tank....

so all in all ill hvae a truck that will run on vegitable oil, which is free.... for 3 grand.
seeing as it gets about 10 miles to the gallon or so, this whole thing would pay for itself in roughly 12 thousand miles..
12k miles/10 mpg = 1200 gallons of gas, 1200 gal @ 2.75 = $3,300...

i will be driving that many miles this summer alone.
but here is the deal...

this has been a dream of mine for some time now. and im wondering if im letting my dream of doing this interfere with the reality of the situation....... which i have done before....

im an adventurer, and this will be a great expierence just to try it, i admit. I have the cash for it (thanks to an inheritance i got) but i dont want to blow all of my money on what could be a failied dream.

I dont konw what to do here...........

I've heard that you get the veg. oil for free but... from where? What if you run out and the nearest greasy diner hasn't made enough greasy burritos to fill your tank?

oyu would be supprised at the amount of this stuff avaliable, right now i could pump about 100 gallons out of my town alone.

thing is, you have to be somewhat sneaky about it, as people wont allways allow you to take it...

yeah i can do it.

but there is a chance that the truck is a pieece of shit, and will die on me.
hell my laslt diesel had 232,000 miles on it and the engine still runs... diesels are good for this, but im just not sure about it all...

Exactly, As far as I know veg oil cost more than disel fuel right? Where are you going to get it for free?

you can use waste vegitbale oil, the stuff that every mcdonalds and burger joint used to deep fry their fries.

you have to filter it, but you can do that, while youre pumping it out of the trap at the resturant,

So, your going to have to steal the oil then? Bad. You will get caught doing it all the time and the bond and court cost will set you back.

well no, many places will let you have it, theyre happy to give it away, some times you have to just take it though.

thing is most places have to pay to have ti taken away, its a nasty substance.....

well the thing is that most towns require the places to register with a licensed grease remover, beacuse it costs so much to have it hauled away, many places were dumping it down into the sewers, which is a major evniornmental no no.

speaking of the enviornment, running a car on this grease, will not add any more to the greenhouse effect, beacuse it is a closed carbon cycle...

but really thats not the big deal, the oil.... the big deal is weather i should risk 3 grand...., even though a grand will bea recoverable cost (reselling the kit)

Just make sure the van has no mechanical problems. Take it to a shop and have them check it out... it will be worth the money, trust me I have made the same mistake more than once.

I have to agree with BK on that. Make sure it is in decent condtion before you purchase. You never know how good the previous owners were with upkeep on old vehicles like that. It might be a $2000 truck, but once you start having to replace parts the price will go up dramatically.

Staye sane in Miami.... I hated that city, during my brief drug-fueled visit there.

It was a Caprice Classic. Even had the car functioned perfectly for the whole week, I would not have liked that place. Urban sprawl to the nth degree. Fuck that.
