If anyone is familiar with George Herbert Mead then they would know that he says, "Not only the self, but also the human mind is a social product."
He says we cannot think without symbols. We attain these symbols through language and society putting meaning behind things. Without these symbols we wouldn't be able to think and possess what we call the mind. Mind. then, like language, is a product of society.
Do you think we're the only creatures to have this ability? Or do animals and such have the ability to create symbols and a sort of 'language' that they live by?

i think all living creaters first follow their main insticts, which would be survival.
in survival a few things are needed (food, shelter, protection, etc) so to comunicate we use smybols but to communicate.
so basically all animals follow survival insticts, and relate things to the product of their survival. there seems to be some sort of communication in some animals, and would have to be with symbols (either audio symbols, hand, body movement, etc).
does this go with what you were saying or have i strayed?

No, that makes a lot of sense of course, but without language would we be like ravaging carnivores or would we be calm and cool like guerillas.
Some reports of children found in the woods or somehting raised by monkeys or whatnot have shown that if it's late enough in the childs life they have huge problems joining up with society because they haven't learned to be human.
what does this say about us? Its crazy how our mind is just like a big sponge when we're young and hasn't formed some concrete world view that we will live by.

well our environment plays a huge roll in our life. half of how we think is stuff passed down through genes (the thoughs of survival, food, etc). and the environment we grow up builds the other half of our mind. look at all the people from different societies and cultures have problems when trying to adjust to other cultures and societies.

the human mind is a by product of the evolution of consciousness
conscious entities as a whole (some call it spirituality, but that is merely a shortcut)
consciousness is even more vastly complex than the spiritual nature simply because it entails the entire mind and how the thought plane you exist on is experienced in your perception of time.
