Will 1/3verm/peat/shit work as a casing ?

Hello :) please can someone tell me whether I am being foolish in planning to case Cubies from Cambodia with a mixture of one third vermiculite, one third peat and one third old cow shit that smells like ground .
I intend to have a bottom layer of vermiculite aswell .
Pleeeeeeeeese help me .

I don't think you want to do that. Your top casing layer should be 1/2 verm. 1/2 peat. this will protect the mycelium from contaminants troughout the fruiting cycle. I think if you put dung in there you will open yourself up to potential contamination problems. No on the other hand if you want to use dung as an addative to your substrate then go nuts. But no go on the casing. Hope this helps, good luck.

People might disagree with this idea for the reasons stated above but I figured I'd experement on some of my straw tek tubs and it worked great as a casing layer for them however I may be the exception. The tubs that were cased moved alot faster than the ones that were not as well as pinset and fruits being larger. Like I said though I may be an exception.

. Wet the poop till you can just squeeze out a little water...  then nuke in the microwave in a container for 10 minutes on high. Let it cool....  then add a little more water if it dried some from nuking. Make sure it is all the way cooled off before you crumble the cakes into the shit. You`ll be AMAZED at how fast  the mycelia colonizes. Put saran with a few holes in it over the casing container and some foil to keep it dark.I`ve had 75% colonization of the substrate in 24 hours. ....no exagerration.Mycelia hauls ass with the dung added. Then case with your peat/verm and watch the magic grow . Make sure you don`t wait too long before casing because dung added to those crubled cakes will overlay real fast. It wouldn`t be a total loss but they will only fruit at the sides of the casing. Oh yeah and wait till you see the sizes of your shroomies if this is the first time you`ve used dung. They are much larger.. big fat thick stems and huge caps. Good luck :smile:

Thank you numba9 maye I'll reconsider using dung - how much dung shall I add as a ratio to the cakes .
And I dont have a microwave so will the oven do?
If I dont use dung with the jars I have ready now then I'll use your method with my next set - already growing away .

.Yes the oven will work.. but you have to bake at 350 for about an hour...  May smell like a pasture too  lol...might want to point a fan out the window...  don`t know never used a conventional oven. Then  let cool then add enough water and squeeze if it dried some. I mix equal parts dung to cakes..  crumble cakes in a zip lock bag  to about marble size pieces and then eyeball about the same amount of dung and mix all together...This will be a robust substrate without a doubt !!!!!!!!! You REALLY will be shocked at how fast the mycelia takes over the dung.... Good luck again.......  Once dung works for you I swear you will never go back to just casing plain cakes:cool:

i think i am confused.. i thought dung should be pasteurized, not sterilized. is that only straw? does it matter for dung?
