Morality of Media Piracy
    #5174621 -

Do you pirate media? If so, do you believe it to be immoral, amoral or moral? Why?

I do not. No it is not. I don't know.

Most of the shit I pirate, I wouldn't spend a dime on. I just watched The Ringer and The Transporter 2... they both sucked. I would've been pissed if I had spent money to see those movies. I think the movie industry (and the music industry) owes it to me to not overmarket shitty product. How many times have you bought/rented/paid to watch a movie and felt gyped? This is my wish and it didn't come true, so I'm taking it back... I'm taking them all back.

My extensive music/movie collection proves my point.... there are few crappy movies or albums in my collection. But I can't tell you how (before Napster came along) many times I bought CDs and got one good song and a dozen tracks of garbage.

If you know that the quality is going to be as expected, right on par, will you pay for it even if you have means to get it for free illegally?

I've done it in the past and feel like Ice and sclorch do about it.

The stuff I pirated, I would've never paid for either.

Now, if I was willing to pay for something and found a way to steal it for free, would I? NO. Why? I guess if you pirate stuff that isn't even worth paying for, its the same as taking stuff from the city dump and no one cares.

If its worth paying for then, yes, my moral compass would feel off if I stole it and I can't see myself doing that.

If you want to get this discussion going spud, throw out some hypotheticals and some of your own thoughts and feelings on it.

I'm sorry. I was feeling a little burnt out at the time. I guess these kinds of questions are meaningless for me. I shouldn't have posted. My bad. :mushroom2:

So theft is subjective to the self imposition of value?

Isn't that sorta, absurd?

Can I go to your house and steal a belonging of yours simply because I view it as worthless?

If it was the quality I wanted then yes, I would pay for it, even if I could get it for free legally. Why? Quality shit deserves the compensation.

The magazine photos of under water shots I pirated for brochures were not even of the quality I was looking for. I had to cut and paste on photo shop to get the shot I wanted. I did go to check out the stock of the under water photographers and they were mediocre shots at rip off prices. If I found an awesome one in their stock, I still would have paid the rip off price-after negotiating it down some.

I did what I had to do to get the pics I wanted and have lost no sleep over it.

Now we are getting somewhere. First off, your example doesn't work for this topic. When someone pirates from the media, they are not taking the original and only away from the artist. they are making a copy from it. Thats why i don;t think most of us see it as stealing. The artist still has their original.

Morally, I feel it is stealing potential income from the artist, if I was willing to pay for the copy and found a way to get it illegally for free. Morally, it wouldn't sit right with me because like I said, if it was high enough quality to pay for it then, I think the artist deserves the support and compensation for a job well done and to keep them going. It would be my way of showing my appreciation and I do that quite often. Hell, I gave my daughters acting/vocal coach $100 tip for christmas because I appreciate her work.

I'm the same way.

I have an extensive movie collection, except it's all of extremely high quality movies.

How do you feel about it personally spud? Lets start with that. What is your moral compass feeling?  I'm not going to judge you for it. I think how you feel about it is all that should matter to you. if you are concerned to take into consideration the view of someone who thinks its morally wrong, I'm not the one to give you that view.

Even still, they have the original, its not like you stole that from them. You kept them from making potential money off their work, but, thats the risk they take to make the big bucks they do. For me, I think its cool when you show appreciation of the things you value. Make up for it and tell everyone you know to rent the movies. Give them free advertisement or something in exchange.

I pirate things that are incredibly expensive, such as seasons or series of TV shows and anime.

For example, a few years ago I decided to DL all of the Ranma 1/2 Episodes. If I wanted to purchase them, they'd run me about $120 per a season, and there is about 12 seasons I believe. See, that's just ridiculous in my opinion.

I do the same with operating systems and other incredibly expensive forms of media.

When I feel bad, I take the money I would of spent on it and donate it to charity. I know it isn't exactly the most logical thing to do, but it alleviates any feelings of guilt.

I pirate music thats about it. It dosn't bother me. I try to make an effort when a band that I listen too is in town to go see them and usually throw some cash down for a shirt.

Aside:
In Canada it is legal to download music but it is illegal to upload :cuckoo:. We also pay a tax (small one) on all digital recording devices (blank cd's, ipods,  etc) that gets redistributed amongst the recording industry.

That's really clever actually!

My stance on this is the same as Jiggy's, although when i buy something i appreciate i'll get it online, 3rd party Amazon sellers usually. I refuse to buy from big music stores like HMV and Virgin because it's daylight robbery. Corporate cocknobs, they make far too much money from adding to the price... why the hell should they get away with charging ?15 for an album you can buy online for a fiver??

I do try and download as much Metallica as possible though, just out of principle (i hope you're reading this Lars you little bitch!)
