The Gospel of Thomas is definitely necessary. After that, I think most translations of the Nag Hammadi texts are quite similar, so it shouldn't make a huge difference.

Making the noise "penicillin" is no substitute for actually taking penicillin.

I'm tearing through this one currently. It is definately worth the read (you can go to Edward R. Hamilton, Bookseller, on-line and find it for $16 and change, usually $25). It will not go into the often bizarre cosmogonies of the different schools, but more importantly it will well-illustrate the critical difference between Literal Christianity and Gnostic Christianity. Once you understand how this differs in Christianity, it can be understood in other religions. Assertions in this book are well documented with footnotes.

Once you 'get' that Gnosis is equivalent to Awakening, Enlightenment, Realization, etc. one can better separate the 'wheat from the chaff' of scriptural books. If you are interested in Christian Gnosis, I further recommend Elaine Pagels' The Gnostic Paul. What she does is to illustrate what a Gnostic interpretation of Paul's writings are, contrasted with the typical Literalist (Freke's and Gandy's term from the above book) interpretation.

A more general read by the well-known author Harold Bloom is Omens of Millennium: The Gnosis of Angels, Dreams and Resurrection. Might be out-of-print, but www.BN.com has a fine out-of-print selection.

It would be best to get a well-rounded introduction of the conception of Gnosis before one attempts to read Nag Hammadi literature. Hope this helps. I'm trying to feed you appetizers to increase any hunger you might have on Gnosticism lest you discover choke yourself on some dry, difficult to digest material

Thanks for inquiring, but you could've PMed me
