Does a spirit pre-incarnate fear the transition just as we fear the transition into death?

it would very much seem like it to me.... but i have a rather pessimistic view of the birth and death process right now.

it kind of seems like you sort of dream yourself into existence and gain sentience sometime in the toddler years....... the rest being a haze where you aren't particularly attached to your infant body.

but maybe not. Being an infant must be intolerably harsh and cruel.... especially during birth.... and then if you're an american male you have to endure circumcision... your first encounter with your genitals and its of searing pain ...... it must be overwhelmingly difficult to endure..... but memories don't really "persist" .... but certainly since infants are alive and breathing, they can feel ...

it's a tough issue. All I know is I seem to remember being a baby and ..... it seems like i was by and large outside of myself.....

take this statement with a grain of salt, i'm not myself sure about it... i just seem to remember "figuring out" that my parents wanted me to eat my first birthday cake, and so i decided to thrust myself into it... and the decision seemd to be that of a sort of puppeteer "willing" the infant.... but... perhaps it was a shred of consciousness from the "bardo" still left behind to look after things, which eventually decayed and merged with the brain/body to be largely forgotten.

hummm. memory is fascinating. but this is a little of topic.

I can say that I once had a dream where I was about to be born, and I did not want that at all! But resisting lead from human to animal, and that was so very much worse..... I was pretty much being sucked into a womb without much say in the matter.

My son was like two weeks late being born. He must have been afraid. Finally I had to have the Doctor go in there and serve up an eviction notice and kick his ass out. What a freeloader...

You know Leery, I too seem to remember my infant years as being outside myself. Kind of like how you watch yourself do things in a dream. You don't see things through your eyes like normally.

Maybe it's because you haven't developed a sense of self at that point, and don't view things through the egocentric reference point that becomes so important in adulthood.

Well, if a spirit were transitioning into this world, then it would definately not be coming from this world.

That I don't know, but reliving the birth trauma on a huge dose of LSD was mortal terror (Thanatos) balanced with polymorphous sexuality (Eros), which seemed to 'urge' me on and keep me from sucumbing to the terror of crushing suffocation. (Sometimes ya never know what kind of answer you'll get huh?  :wink: )

buddhist approach... there is no spirit, consciousness just migrates from vessel(body) to vessel.

i.e. so you eventually are drawn toward a mother and father and transition into becoming their baby....... but you're just pure consciousness until that point.

ive thought that, but i think its just a passing whimsy. is there an entity that brings emotion forth, befor teh baby is physically capable?

fancy of course. but i could never say for sure. my answer will always be "sure, probably".

in psychology the change in synchronous processing rates seems to be the raw material of fear

Dracho, I never implied that a spirit was transitioning from one world to another. Only that it was transitioning from one stage/phase/form into another. I make no speculations about what happens in the "afterlife"...

my purpose in asking this question was to make the point, that if a baby/pre-incarnate-spirit doesn't fear being born, then why should we ever be afraid of dying.

And if it DOES fear being born, do you think that it's fear was unfounded? Are there things for a spirit to fear in living life? Are there things for a spirit to fear in death?

I personally don't believe that a spirit would feel emotions. I don't even really know if I believe in sentient spiritual entities. But I think asking ourselves this question helps put our fear of dying into perspective.

leery11 wants to replace it with a different word, he chooses consciousness. Still just as vague as "spirit", and he talks about it in the same manner as one would talk of a spirit, so there is not much difference in making the switch. But whatever, what is "consciousness " then? Hell, what is "pure consciousness?"

And what reason do we have to believe that we bring anything into this world with us, aside from our genetic inheritance?
