Who here fears death?
    #3507428 - 12/16/04 04:15 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Not I. When i was a little kid, the thought of my own death would upset me terribly. I guess it had something to do with my beliefs in a christian god, and his being able to send his children to "hell" for all eternity.
or the thought that maybe there was nothing after life. Just a rotting body in the ground. It made me sad, and frightened.
Over the years tho, after being in a few cars that were totalled while i was in them, and experiencing ego-death on mushrooms. My outlook has changed.

I now believe that their is no end to existence. Their is no eternal "hell". Death is unavoidable, so living in fear of it is pointless.Billy jack said it best. You've got to keep death by your side, like a friend. Knowing that its with you all the time. That this could be the last breath you ever take. NOW
Look forward to it. Its the next big step. Probly alot like birth, or a hard mushroom trip.

I don't fear death. The only thing I'm afraid of is not being able to do a lot of the things I would like to do before I die.

The philosophy of death doesn't bother me, but the thought of dying horribly does.

"Not I," said the cat.

Pretty much same reason as you... a combination of several NDE's and EGE's (ego loss experiences, heh.)

I don't mind death. I don't like it, but I don't fear it. The reason is because like you all said, I just hope I get to do the things I want to do before it comes for me. But then I self contradict myself because I'm sure I'd be able to do it in another Earth which is suppose to be created by God. "And God will create a new heaven and a new Earth". Or something like. If this is the case, then I have faith in that, and that I will be able to do those things if I die, knowing I believe in that for hundreds of reasons.

I don't mind death. I don't like it, but I don't fear it. But as Dreamer said, I fear the pain of life. "Do not feel sorry for the dead, because the dead feels sorry for you."

It is easy to say you don't fear death now. How many of you could still say that and not be blatantly lying when your camry flies off the road and hits a tree and you find yourself through the windshield holding your guts in your hands as the breath gets fainter and fainter...

I fear the process not acutal death. I am really looking forward to it. I don't want to die next week I want to live a long life and see my kids grow and have a good life and guide them the best I can. But when this game is over a new one happens...I hope. I have had "ego death" many times from psychedelics but I think of that as practice for the real thing. Enjoy life, try not to rush it. Just think 100 years from now all new people.

i don't fear death, but i don't know what we go through when we die. i assume it isn't an awful experience, unless it occurs in a painful manner (fire, drowning, eaten alive).

maybe i would fear it if i was to find out that death is a horrifying experience.

It is an insurmountable inconvenience and I will avoid it unto the death,
meantime I wonder if I can make a second last forever, and it seems that sometimes it does.
not sure it is related

Often I long for Death, but at the same time I fear It. Both the time as a dead man walking, and what happens afterwards. The fear has kept me going during melodramatic times.

Maybe I shouldn't have studied illustrations based on Dante, eh?

Are we only talking about the cessation of materialism? Or the death of the soul/spirit?
The first holds no fear for me.the second is very frightening

this walking around on the planet's surface
is like an extra thing altogether.
we with loose eyes and yummy bags of flesh
yappy dogs and flappy ducks
all temporary dreams
then
who dies?

looner has a point. You say that now. It's nice to rationalize about death without being near it. A better question to see the answer is - do you react in fear of death? When you walk down a street during a green light and speeding cars stop, do you fear them? Have you had real near death experiences? How did you react? Were you afraid?

if your answer is in the very least yes, you fear death.

I for one fear death insofar that I refuse to die before I finish doing what I want to do. The physical process feels like a horrible chore where your lungs stop breathing.. next your heart stops beating.. It's very relieving for that to stop.

I'm just surprised at how many of you shrug off death as a picnic before your surprise.
