Here is a qoute from Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms.

"
Substrates for Fruiting: Hardwood sawdust and wood chips, especially alder, cottonwood, oak, birch, and beech. Douglas fir will also support fruitings. "

I would think Aspen would work also.

When i find azures in Astoria i find them alot under blackberry bushes, i would use a combination of sea sand, decomposed sticker bushes, and some alder chips,or any hardwood chips, this is where i find the most here in Oregon. I would take some blackberry branches preferebly decomposed and put them in the pressure cooker for maybe 1-2 hours. Wow this really could be a good damn way of growing Azurescens outdoors.I find em in dunes, chips, and under stickers, so lets recreate the natural environment! Thats my advice what do u think Anno?

I would hope aspen would work. We don't have many hardwood forests here, but plenty of aspens. I hope to try it in the spring, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

>I grew azures on spruce mulch. <

and that's not even a hardwood, I thought they were susposed to grow in hardwood chips? and where the hell can you get decomposed hardwood chips? you'd almost have to find it in the wild or let it sit for a year. the only stuff i'd be able to find would be fresh.
