Apple and other fruit type trees are very hard and they colonize slower. Softer hardwoods are better. It might work but it is not a "good" substrate. As far as transfering, just be sterile and transfer chunks of colonized brf to the agar with streile tweezers or something.

If you had no other choice, you could boil the apil wood for a while to soften it up...but it might take less work to just find another type of wood. Cheers
